Del Rio firefighters responded to calls last weekend including a cane and brush blaze nine miles west of Del Rio on Vega Verde Road. The Saturday incident began shortly after 2 p.m. and burned until about 6 p.m., with 12 firefighters in 3 units. No injuries or property damage were reported. cause undetermined per Capt. Ron Barber.
Maria H Daniels, 71, injured when backed into in a Del Rio convenience store lot on Dec 14. She remains in fair but guarded condition in University Hospital San Antonio’s surgical trauma intensive unit. A 15 year old driver cited for no license and no insurance. Local bank opened a medical expense fund under Maria Victoria Castro Daniels.
Three men impersonating officers shot Teodoro Mercedes, 27, to death in his apartment garage. Police say the attackers flashed badges, cuffed his wife then placed her and their infant in a car before fleeing.

Cardenas author of My Name is Jacinto will autograph copies Tuesday at Plaza del Sol Mall in Del Rio from 3 to 5 p.m. The Austin resident, a 1959 San Felipe High School graduate, discusses his contemporary story of a 16 year old Mexican American navigating culture, family, and civil rights within Anglo and Hispanic communities.
La Fiebre and Lobo IV perform a New Year’s Eve show at the Del Rio Ballroom this Wednesday. Tickets cost $15 with $1 pizza slices and free party favors. Tickets available at Sam's Boot Corral and several local venues. La Fiebre is Tejano award nominated for Song of the Year and Best Album Group for Fenomenal.
Big Bend National Park raises commercial tour fees as part of a nationwide plan. New rates are 200 for motor coaches, 100 for buses, 75 for vans, 25 plus 5 per person for sedans. private noncommercial vehicle fees stay unchanged.
