Christmas blackout tests Maine families in ice storm
In central Maine and beyond, extended outages from a weekend ice storm left about half a million utility customers without power. Residents faced a cold Christmas Eve as crews worked to restore service. Many planned to stay with relatives or seek hotels. The National Weather Service warned of more snow moving into northern plains and Rockies before reaching the Midwest. The nationwide death toll was reported elsewhere.

Early Christmas gifts bring joy to 150 Del Rio children

Santa distributed presents, a bouncing castle entertained, and Del Rio 4x4 monster truck toured outside. Partners H E B and Del Rio 4x4 donated funds and gift cards totaling about 1500 dollars to buy toys for preselected families through WIC, Pathways shelter, and community arrivals.

Hospital wraps newborns in Christmas stockings tradition
In Southern California, hospitals spread holiday cheer by delivering newborns in oversized red stockings. Long Beach Memorial Medical Center joined a half century old custom, while Redlands Community Hospital continued the tradition this month. The Riverside Press Enterprise notes the 1930 origin and 2005 revival. This year 16 volunteers made 250 fleece stockings during a daylong sewing bee.
