City officials urge residents to cut water use now to affect rates for the coming year. The council cites December to February average water consumption as the basis for next year s sewer charges. Acting City Manager Martinez says conservation now can reduce bills later.
Lane two of the new toll plaza will be closed from 8 a.m Wednesday to noon Dec. 30 to allow cement to be poured at the site. Traffic delays may form during peak hours though several maquilas will be closed until January so trucks and trailers should not add delays. The two federal agents fired for not calling off last year's botched raid on the Branch Davidian compound have been rehired with back pay and benefits under a settlement with the ATF.
Lonnie Ricks sponsored the Annual Project NINO Benefit Garage Sale in Del Rio. The Wednesday event netted more than $6,000 for underprivileged children as merchandise vanished within an hour, drawing strong community turnout.
Val Cadena ended his tenure as county judge with a pledge to continue serving Val Verde County. Speaking at a Commissioners' Court meeting he said he will remain available to county government, reflecting on 31 years in business and public life. Cadena wished the court luck and offered season’s greetings as he concluded his term. County Judge-elect Ray Kirkpatrick and Commissioner-elect Gary Leonard set to take office Jan. 1.
Ellen Williams directs the Living Christmas Tree production The Gift of Christmas at Amistad Christian Academy. She found the promo tape at a convention and felt drawn to direct. Performances are at 7 30 tonight and Friday at Paul Pong Theatre for the Performing Arts. Williams says the music is upbeat and contemporary with new pieces and traditional favorites. The show emphasizes that Jesus is the gift of Christmas and aims to bless the community with its message. Production includes surprises and is produced with Peggy Moreland listed.
North Korea handed the body of Chief Warrant Officer David Hilmon to U S officials at Panmunjom. Rep Bill Richardson predicted Chief Warrant Officer Bobby Hall would be released soon but offered no commitment. Hall remains detained as North Korea completes its investigation into the helicopter incursion.
City Council approved plans and bid applications Wednesday to improve the Silver Lake Waste Water Treatment Plant. The project, costing about 127,743 dollars, funds paving and on site testing moved from Kerrville, using a 1991 improvement loan from the Texas Water Development Board.
