The Val Verde Hospital District EMS faces shortages as paramedics must meet strict continuing education and retesting to keep certification. With 11 of 13 EMS slots filled, calls collide and nurses sometimes fill in though not licensed for EMS. RN certification requires CPR, 36 months experience, extrication training, and passing the skills and written exams.

Lady Dorothy Hutchinson Stewart aged 57 died of a heart attack on December 21 in Chula Vista California. She was born January 10, 1929 in Del Rio and educated there, later graduating from Baptist Memorial Hospital in 1949. She is survived by husband George Stewart three sons Wayne Grady and Billy Bob all of California four daughters Jerri Dee Lady Renee Peggy Stewart all of California and Trixie Wilfinger of Idaho seven grandchildren her mother Pauline Hutchinson of Del Rio and brother Hugh Hutchinson Jr of Pampa Funeral services are pending in Chula Vista.
In San Antonio five volunteers dressed as Santa Claus with the Eli Louise Project allegedly kept some of the gifts meant for needy children. Recipients reported only one gift per child instead of two, said Betty Beasley, a building supervisor for the charity.
