Contributing Writer notes today is the last chance to catch Border Players production of A Christmas Carol with final performances at 2 and 6 p.m. Tickets cost 5 for adults and 2 for students. The cast, a community group, features Ron Zalewski as Bob Cratchit and Ann Marie Limas as Mrs Cratchit, among others with local ties and theatre credits.
The government announced a new peso system for 1993 making the currency simpler. Old and new pesos will circulate together through 1993 with bills of the same value but fewer zeros and labeled NUEVOS PESOS.
Colorful decorations graced the Festival of Lights parade on Lake Amistad on December 5. The City of Del Rio won the Grand Prize, with Bruce and Jane Jussles earning first in the Pleasure Class and their entry in the Houseboat Class taking center stage.
The Salvation Army in Del Rio uses a mix of paid bell-ringers and volunteers to fund Christmas aid. chairman Ernest Wortey notes volunteer shortages. Texas Employment Commission workers fill gaps. The Commissioners' Court will meet at 9 a.m. Monday at the Val Verde County Courthouse to choose a health insurance plan for county employees. Costs run about $500,000 yearly with two options: switch to a FAC policy from the Texas Association of Counties backed by Prudential saving about $46,000 but removing some benefits, or stay with Blue Cross/Blue Shield but pursue a self similar plan which could cost more or less depending on claims. Also on the agenda are a sheriff's office staffing request and a dump truck contract award.
Staff writer Michael Margolis reports the school board will convene Monday at 7 30 p m in the District Administrative Office Board Room 205 Memorial Drive. Superintendent Walter Williams will present a report on student performance based on the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills.
The Foundation aims to broaden educational opportunities by expanding degree programs and course offerings. Funds will enlarge existing facilities currently used by SWTJC and Sul Ross University in Del Rio, a move viewed favorably for community growth and attracting new business.
Republican Henry Bonilla plans to open a Del Rio office on January 4 as required by law. Spokesman Phil Ricks said a fulltime liaison will serve Del Rio Eagle Pass Uvalde Crystal City and Carrizo Springs and will be chosen from six strong local candidates. Bonilla recently joined the House Appropriations Committee and is assembling his staff.
