In Hayward California the Downtown Merchants Association spent 13000 to display 83 lighted red green and amber ornaments along the main street as a Christmas greeting. The division of highways ordered they be turned off because motorists confused them with stop go and caution signals.
A third specimen of a rare Texas bat species has been collected, with prior finds near Langtry in Val Verde County and Fresno Mine in Presidio County. Biologist Boston notes the bat’s strong wing drop, roosting habits in cracks and crevices, and intermittent daytime chatter. The duration of its possession by biology students remains uncertain.
NASA officials pursue an on time 7 51 a m launch for Apollo 8 with Frank Borman James Lovell and William Anders on board. A technical oxygen contamination issue could delay the countdown but managers expect to resolve it and observers will monitor fuel and nitrogen reuse as countdown continues.
President Nixon announced George W. Yost as the likely new U.N. ambassador designate and described him as an expert on the Middle East and a skilled diplomat. He noted Shriver would stay in his current post and that Yost had worked with Humphrey and McCarthy on international peace efforts.

Catholic catechism class students and kindergarten groups perform tonight. Candy Jones, a Southern student, is expected with J M Jones Sr and J M Jones Jr arriving Sunday.
Forty five art students of Miss Pamela Burma will present a Christmas matinee for all ages at Del Rio. The event runs at 9:30 a.m. on Christmas Day and features papier mache blocks as part of the school pageant.
County Judge James H. Lindsey announced a two year term history panel for Val Verde County to join the state Operate Recordation program. Mrs. M. Jones of Del Rio is named for the panel as the work aims to develop the county history and align with Texas history program goals.
Donato Rodrigues announced at an agency board meeting on Thursday that new poverty worker trainees will be enrolled from families of CEP enrollees in Eagle Pass. Restrictions on trainee numbers were explained, travel allotment of $25 weekly urged for increase, and a district-wide travel need noted. Board members plan to elect four new members at a San Felipe meeting on January 7 and a January 9 session in Chiapas.

The congressman accepted the city's invitation this morning. The new facility will be built beside San Felipe Creek using city and federal funds.
Fire interrupts electrical service at a small tavern in Ciudad Acuna. Firemen from the local department battled the blaze from early morning, the building was destroyed but adjacent structures were saved. Fire crew reported damages and response times.
Eleven of twelve American prisoners released by Prince Sihanouk arrived at Clark Air Base near Manila on a flight from Vietnam. They were transported by bus to the terminal for VIP checks and vaccination before heading home for Christmas packages intended for delivery to their former Phnom Penh base.
Dionicio Pena was chosen by the Del Rio City Council to serve as clerk of the works for the San Felipe Neighborhood Center project valued at 300000 dollars. He will be employed by Eugene Wukasch and Associates and paid from program funds. Pena is linked to the Val Verde Community Action Agency and works under a city action program administered by a community agency.
