Area schools near holiday break with parochial classes through Dec 22 and return set for Jan 3 as New Year’s Day shifts observance to Monday. Del Rio Boxing Club meets 8:30 PM at GI Forum Building to discuss Dec 26 matches with Crystal City.
Downtown merchants plan extended evening hours to assist shoppers. Most stores stay open until 8 p.m. with some closing at 7. Christmas Eve hours end at 6 p.m. The schedule resumes Monday night with varying closures through 7 or 8 p.m.
Six month old female beagle Missy, white with brown spots, is missing from the Foster home of Abby Rodney and Loise Foster. The family of John Fosters pleads for the return of their pet before Christmas. Requiem high mass will be held at 8:30 a.m. Saturday for Mrs Guadalupe Garza a six year old native who died Wednesday. Burial will follow at San Felipe Cemetery with Diaz Funeral Home. The body lies in state at Diaz Chapel.
African nations push for a Security Council vote by midnight on whether to impose all out sanctions to topple Rhodesia. Uganda’s Apollo Kironde brands Britain’s stance a possible surrender while Britain signals continued pursuit of sanctions and hints at further talks.
Del Rio and vicinity remain fair and partly cloudy with cooler temperatures tonight and Saturday. Low temperatures range from 32 to 34 in Del Rio with highs 64 to 66, while across Southwest Texas east of the Pecos River a clearing trend develops with lows 24 to 34 and highs 55 to 65. The Atomic Energy Commission chose Weston near Chicago as site for a 200 billion volt proton accelerator. The project costs 375 million dollars, takes eight years to build, employs about 1 200 workers during construction, and 2 300 after completion with a 600 million dollar annual operating budget. Weston won against five finalists including Long Island New York Ann Arbor Madison Lowry Field and Sacramento.

Texas draft boards ordered to furnish 674 men for the national draft in February, the lowest monthly call since the Vietnam era. The state quota for January was 1,110 and December 744, with October peaking at 2,845. In 1966 Texas sent 18,274 to the draft.
Del Rio National declares a semi annual dividend of 10 percent per par value amounting to 20 percent annually with payment in Del Rio. Directors say the dividend will put 32500 dollars in circulation to stimulate the local economy as of Dec record date. John R. Johnson executive vice president notes the basis.
UPI reports Saigon headquarters deny American bombs hit Hanoi during the raids. Weather spared Hanoi. 58 missions hit other North Vietnam targets. U.S. forces also attacked Viet Cong outposts in South Vietnam while denials drew reaction from Moscow, Peking, and U Thant.
NCNA in Peking accuses Pope Paul VI and Secretary General Thant of being reactionaries pushing capitulation in peace talks with Vietnam. The broadcast also attacks the Soviet leadership as conspirators and denounces U S air raids as imperialist war pressure while denying strikes on Hanoi.
Tokyo reports say Communist China ordered three of six remaining Soviet correspondents in Peking to leave by December 25 for spreading rumors on the cultural revolution and sowing discord. Beijing accuses Soviet press of anti Chinese provocation and aiding the United States.
Evans testified he pleaded guilty to rape to avoid the electric chair after a Lake Arlington assault. Judge Winters denied a new trial motion following a nine man three woman jury verdict that condemned him to death. Evans hoped a guilty plea would yield a life sentence.
