New York markets opened with broad losses as higher interest rates weighed on sentiment. The Dow Jones industrial average slid 12.09 points in early trading amid weak breadth and 9.13 million shares changing hands on the Big Board.
Circulation chief Aud Boren notes publication days for the Del Rio News-Herald with a second Wednesday edition. The paper lists mailing addresses, subscription rates, and contact numbers for advertising, legal and classified departments, plus staff roles and deadlines.

Del Rio Middle School auditorium hosted a holiday festival featuring drama, strings, choir and band students. The cast of fifty four eighth graders presented John Higgins' musical interpretation of Dickens' A Christmas Carol with direction by Nancy Stewart and Carl Wehn.
Texans plan to spend less than 500 on Christmas gifts this year, per a 1000 respondent Texas Poll. About 37 percent will spend 250 or less, 31 percent 251 to 500, 6 percent 501 to 750, 6 percent more than 1000, and 12 percent are unsure. The average is about 574, with spending patterns varying by income levels.

The evening culminates in four melodies with Cindy Litton and Spencer Wilson in Sing Out the News. Amy Hoekstra and Lisa Stallings perform Silent Night four handed, then Hoekstra joins Newbury for The Journey of the Three Kings. Pete’s Jingle Bells Through the Ages features narration by Wilson Lockhart Burciaga Nester Smith and Hoekstra, with Stallings as accompanist. Doug Smith closes at the piano for Merry Christmas Once Again as the audience applauds.
Five Del Ricans were chosen from 150000 nominations for this year's honors. City Manager Jeffrey A. Pomeranz, 28, received recognition after serving as acting city manager since May 1985 and holding prior roles in city administration, planning, and private consulting. David R. Builta, 28, sports editor of the Del Rio News Herald since 1985, earned a BA in English Communications from St Marys University and is active in the arts. Other honorees include Bradley Hood, an instructor pilot at Laughlin AFB, Danny Lyon Marsh, William Featherston, and Clifton Rhodes.
