Former Dallas Cowboy Robert Newhouse will headline the Ram Boosters Football Banquet this Thursday. Tickets cost 5 dollars and remain at the News-Herald front desk.
Mexican livestock secretary Dr. Reta Petterson orders American port veterinarians to sign guarantees that export sheep goats and hogs are free of lice fleas or ticks prompting Mexican vets to halt inspections at Texas export pens in Del Rio and Eagle Pass. U S inspector Dr Herman Rathke says approving 10000 to 15000 animals weekly with such guarantees is impossible. The move disrupts trade while Mexican buyers fear price jumps as shipments pause.
A grand jury indicted Alonzo Flores 19 on four felony counts for the Dec 3 abduction and rape of two girls ages 7 and 9. Flores allegedly kidnapped them near Maximo Street and raped them near Lake Amistad then threw one into the water before arrest. Three local men, Harding Payne 20 Luis Martinez 19 and Francisco Rivera 34, were indicted on homicide charges in Ricky Patino 25’s Oct 26 killing outside 203 McLymont St. Police identified them leaving the scene and all were later charged.
The Amistad site will transfer land from the International Boundary and Water Commission to the National Park Service. NPS will own the property and gain legislative authority to manage cultural, scientific, and natural resources around Lake Amistad. Greater emphasis will be placed on preserving archaeology and rock art sites.
Val Verde Commissioners' Court met Monday to address CPR and computer problems, road disputes, and various payments. Detention center administrator Julian Menchaca criticized new software as unsuitable and printers as missing. Road items included a disputed 14.6 mile section on Buddy Cortina’s ranch and a plan to add 23.5 miles to total county road mileage. The court approved numerous payments and considered adding a county map for roads. They also approved paying the Comstock Volunteer Fire Department for overlooked budget items.
Del Rio approves joining the Middle Rio Grande Development Council 911 program with a 50 cent per line fee starting about a year before full 911 install. The state mandates the levy and a two year rollout due to cost training and database network needs.
Del Rio teacher Mike Parker active in education and student activities on the Eighth Grade Campus. He coaches writing and acting, serves on the Regional Curriculum Development Team, teaches photography and sculpture at the Firehouse, aids the Chamber of Commerce, and shoots wedding photos. A Bahai Faith adherent, he spent time in Honduras as a missionary with Brenda and their children.
