A winter storm brought sleet and snow north of Del Rio and western Texas, with hail on roofs. By afternoon snow continued to fall and some roads were risky though open in places. Since January 1 rainfall reached 17.17 inches.
An armed man forced a Miami to Dallas jet to divert to Cuba with 45 aboard. The aircraft landed in Havana and became the 15th U S hijacking of the year and the third in eight days. The State Department via the Swiss Embassy arranged overnight lodging for 38 passengers and crew of seven while awaiting a special return flight.
A midnight walkout by Consolidated Co workers left electric and gas service in the New York area in the hands of 4,000 workers, cutting power and threatening millions of customers. Authorities offered few details on the hijacking incident and its weapon, while the FAA sought explanations and a roller coaster of flight diversions persisted across the region.
Washington officials report the Leo Cramer Corp will administer up to 175000 dollars for a VISTA project contract expected to be negotiated by spring. The funds will partially pay 15 to 20 supervisors overseeing the area program.

Operation Senorita sponsored by the Junior League of Lubbock will lodge them in Del Rio then host five days in Lubbock to introduce U S customs culture and living.
