Judge approves Verizon settlement in Michigan case

Judge Kaye Tertzag approved a class action settlement in Detroit ending a four year suit. About 2 million Verizon Wireless customers in Michigan may receive free cell phone time totaling an estimated 30 to 60 million minutes. The agreement covers Cellular One AirTouch and Verizon customers since March 1993 with the disputed 8.2 cent per call landline fee.

Student dies after school bus crash near Vandalia

A 14-year-old girl, Shawna Ward, died from injuries after a school bus crashed Wednesday on a country road near Vandalia, 60 miles south of Springfield. The bus skidded off a two-lane road into a 40-foot ravine. 16 people were hurt and another victim remained in critical condition. A sheriff said the road had been repaved and a guardrail not yet replaced.

Man Whose Obituary Claimed Death Arrested in Minnesota

Robert Michael Mathison, 50, who obituary noted died on July 12, 2003, was arrested in Stillwater. He faces assault charges from a June incident when he allegedly faked a heart attack upon arrest. He is jailed in Washington County with bail set at 10,000 dollars and no expected new charges.

Val Verde Hospital District OKs higher maintenance levy

Val Verde Regional Medical Center directed the Friday special meeting to justify raising the maintenance and operation levy from .1445 to .1520 per $100. CFO Jerry Hennessy cited rising uninsured rates, anticipated Medicaid CHIP eligibility changes, debt service on the MRI loan, and rising supply costs as pressure on the hospital’s bottom line.

Garza to lead Del Rio Freshman School in new principal role

Interim Superintendent Bobby Fernandez announced Lupe Sotelo has resigned as Del Rio Freshman School principal for personal reasons. Jorge Garza will assume the freshman post, bringing experience from Del Rio High and Middle Schools while Raymond Meza oversees Del Rio Middle and San Felipe Middle. Assistant principals Valdez and Soto will cover when Meza is away.
