Pacesetters for the 1990 91 United Way drive began today raising funds through local businesses. Co chair Paul Rosenow notes last year’s effort captured 73 percent of local United Way contributions by engaging employers and workers at work sites. The citywide campaign starts October 1.
Del Rio City Council approved a tax increase to the rollback rate of 3346 by a 5 to 1 vote at the Tuesday meeting. A public hearing on Sept 11 at 7 30 p m was set. Councilman Ray Vasquez opposed the increase. Eduardo Arreola was absent. The increase is 10.46 percent over 1989 rate and reflects a higher effective tax rate due to decreasing valuations. City officials noted residents will pay about .0405 cents per $100 more than last year. The council also approved camping in city parks, a CPL rate study, plat re aplat Chaparral Townhouses, a youth center van bid, a health department contract, and a CPL rate settlement. Mayor Gutierrez called the process confusing. Councilman Weathersbee defended value received.
Del Rio City Council approved a Central Power and Light rate settlement tied to the 1989 effort against a proposed 464 million increase for STNP costs. CPL will raise rates by 26 percent overall with 144 million already added and 120 million to be added in January after a September PUC hearing. City Attorney Bayne and council members described the settlement as the best possible, avoiding a larger increase.
A $10 grant from the Metropolitan Life Foundation to SER Jobs for Progress will help the non profit serve more people in Del Rio and other towns. SER offers employment training and placement through 111 programs in 47 cities, including Family Learning Centers aiding economically disadvantaged parents with education and day care while linking to their children’s schooling. A Tuesday evening storm in Del Rio produced gusty winds that toppled a vacant mobile home on Harvey Drive around 6:30 PM. The storm dropped 0.01 inch of rain and struck the eastern edge of town with several lightning bolts. no injuries were reported.
Emma Turner Stewart known as Miss Emma died August 27 1990 at Del Rio Nursing Home at age 98. She served Val Verde District Clerk for 30 years from 1940 to 1970 and raised ten children with Grady Lytle Stewart. She was a Sacred Heart Academy graduate and a veteran church and civic participant. Funeral services at Sacred Heart Church with a rosary the night before. Survived by sisters daughters foster children sons and many grandchildren. She never lost her humor and was a beloved community figure.
