On this date in 1977 a pasture fire along a roadway near the Buddy Latham and Terry Gries ranches drew about 200 area volunteers. In a separate incident, 13 year old Juan Ramon Osuna Villar died after a horse accident on the family’s ranch in Mexico and head injuries led to his death in Del Rio.
A 2010 murder suspect, Augustin Gonzalez, used a Dallas Police Facebook post to announce surrender plans in Mexico. Detectives advised him to cross the border and turn himself in at a U.S. checkpoint, which he did Friday night. Meanwhile Texas politics see Michael Williams named state education chief by Gov. Perry, succeeding Robert Scott. Williams, a former Bush appointee, had been a Railroad Commissioner and GOP Senate candidate.
Investigators in Cen tral Texas say a man’s body was found in a wooded area near where a missing Texas A&M student’s vehicle was located in Marlin. Police say search dogs found the body Monday night. autopsy ordered. Relatives identify the missing student as Anthony Joseph Carey, 22, Houston, a senior bound for College Station. The car linked to Carey was found Saturday along a Marlin road, about 25 miles southeast of Waco. Authorities have not ruled out foul play.
Dallas Police Chief David Brown met privately with Deanna Cook’s mother and sisters at police headquarters. Cook’s ex-husband Delvecchio Patrick is charged with her killing and remains in custody. Brown said a 911 operator misrouted her call. officers did not find her alive. The family found her body on August 19 as police updated procedures to require lights and sirens on high danger calls.
A Dallas area shelter at Faith Baptist Church in DeSoto opened to aid evacuees as Tropical Storm Isaac neared hurricane strength off Louisiana. Red Cross volunteers awaited evacuees while Gov. Perry activated a disaster district committee in Beaumont to assist potential Louisiana evacuees. The Texas EOC in Austin monitored Isaac as forecasters warned of possible flooding across Louisiana Mississippi Alabama and Florida with a surge and heavy rains anticipated in New Orleans.
An Amarillo homebuilder, Paul David Gillette, was sentenced to 45 years in prison after a Potter County jury found him guilty of murder in the 2010 death of his estranged wife Sherry Gillette. Authorities say he strangled her outside their west Amarillo home on August 22, 2010, and her body was later found in a sport utility vehicle in their garage.
