Overton East Texas hosts a plan by the Republic of Texas contending annexation was illegal to purchase a 16 000 square foot former hospital on 7 5 acres as the national capitol headquarters. Lauren Savage says Overton fits as the site.
Early voting runs 8 am to 4 30 pm at Val Verde County Courthouse 400 Pecan St through Sept 9 with Labor Day closure Sept 1. Election day is Saturday Sept 13 7 am to 7 pm. Propositions cover veterans facilities tax, mineral buy-back, religious property tax exemptions, parks by utility districts, travel trailer tax relief, reverse mortgage refi, six-person juries, single-candidate elections, school endowment fund investments, fire equipment donations, direct wine sales by wineries, pain and suffering caps, tax freezes, TxDot short term borrowing, retirement benefits protections, home equity lines, disabled tax freeze, rural districts, military base bonds, professors on water boards, and military service vacancy rules.
The San Felipe Del Rio Consolidated Independent School District will maintain its $1.4455 per $100 valuation tax rate, with $1.38 for the general fund and $0.655 for debt service. The district forecasts 85 percent of its budget from state funding, and about 15 percent from taxes, and plans no near term rate hike. A Bank and Trust depository contract was extended to Aug 31, 2005 by a 5-0-1 vote, with one abstention and one absent board member.
Two Val Verde County commissioners oppose a blanket county employee pay hike amid fiscal strain. Judge Mike L Fernandez proposed a 5 percent raise with a $2000 cap to save money while still aiding workers who rely on welfare programs. County Auditor Frank Lowe estimated the full raise at about 273000 and supported the cap as fair.
Del Rio auto repairman Jose Luis Hinojosa pleaded guilty on two counts of fraud and conspiracy against the U S government stemming from an April 4 indictment of 17 counts. Co-defendant Ruben V Leal has not pleaded. Hinojosa admitted filing fraudulent claims for auto parts and pre signing forms to aid Leal, plus miscoding documents to enable payments for maintenance. He said he provided free routine auto upkeep to Leal to sustain the relationship with the Postal Service. Potential penalties include up to three years on count one and related terms on count sixteen.
