Whitis defeated for MRGDC seat in runoff

Mayor Herb Whitis faced a runoff after a preliminary vote for six at-large seats on the Middle Rio Grande Development Council board in Uvalde. Walter Block had sought Whitis nomination, but Charlie Danner defeated him 8-6 in the runoff, with other new at-large members named: Edward P. Rodriguez, Alfonso Esquivel, Tim Ward, Frank Guerrero, and James Black.

Juvenile Arrested in Vehicle Burglary Case

A 14 year old boy was turned over to Val Verde County juvenile rotation officers after his arrest for the burglary of an automobile. He was taken from his home about 7 30 p m Wednesday in connection with a vehicle burglary in the 400 block of East First Street around 9 12 p m Tuesday. A neighbor reported two boys entering and leaving a car nearby. No losses were reported and Patrolman Donald Weaver made the arrest under the investigation led by Acting Captain Charles Bruce.

U S Responds to Korean and Libyan Incidents

White House officials described the Korean incident and the Libyan attack on U S aircraft as separate events with no evidence of a link. President Reagan was briefed by the White House Situation Room around 9 am PDT, with details still being evaluated by the Defense Department.

Raymundo Mendoza reports 10 gallons stolen from his station wagon while parked at 723 Sage Drive between 9 p.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. Wednesday. Loss valued at 12.30 dollars as Del Rio Police investigate the incident.

Rain chances rise as thundershowers push into weekend

The National Weather Service projects a 20 percent chance of showers and thundershowers this afternoon and tonight, rising to 40 percent Friday. Highs in the mid 90s, morning lows around 70s, and south winds 5 to 10 mph. All-time temp records noted for August 27. Extended forecasts show scattered showers in South Texas and mostly fair in West Texas with seasonal to near 100 degree highs.

Del Rio man sentenced to five years in prison

Del Rio man Wednesday was sentenced to five years in the Texas Department of Corrections after he was found guilty Tuesday in 63rd Judicial District Court of distributing methamphetamines. Robert Lee Jefferson, 26, 805 Dignowity St., is one of three defendants arrested by Department of Public Safety narcotics officers on March 7. Artic Factor, 28, 200 Avant St., also was found guilty of distribution of methamphetamines and sentenced to five years in the TDC in June. The third defendant, Tamara Evans, 24, 208 E. Fourth St., pleaded guilty to the distribution charge and was sentenced to two years to the TDC in June. The three were arrested at Factor's residence following an undercover investigation that began in December. Several other defendants were also sentenced after entering guilty pleas in 68rd Judicial District Court, Assistant District Attorney Marsha Monroe said.

Rites set for John Rogers Johnson bank exec 81

John Rogers Johnson 81 longtime vice president of Del Rio National Bank will be buried in Masonic Cemetery after funeral at Humphreys- Doran Funeral Home. He died Wednesday morning at his Broadview Street home born August 18 1900 worked at the bank since 1919 married Myrtle Schubert in 1924 who died in 1977. He was a member of First United Methodist Church Hoena and charter member of the Del Rio Antique Car Club with survivors including a brother Pleas Johnson of Phoenix and a niece and nephew.
