In Moss Point Mississippi six people were hurt when a house exploded, apparently from a gas leak. Willie Harris and his wife Syvil Harris along with Sherminda Irving were in critical condition, Irving's 1-year-old son was airlifted to Shriner's Hospital, while Yvette Brown and Larry Simmons were treated and released. Fire officials noted pockets of flames persisted after the blast and investigators began examining the scene to determine the cause.

Bonds fund school building projects in Del Rio district
On August 21 the Del Rio school board awarded bonds to Paine Webber Inc at a 5.49 tax rate. The funds will finance a new junior high near Calderon Elementary, an ROTC building, and other facilities. Total cost exceeds the bond amount of 29.4 million, with TEA reimbursement at 81.67 percent.
