School burglary investigated in Del Rio
A Del Rio elementary school reports theft of 15 from an electric pencil sharpener and 15 in meal tickets during a 11:15 p.m. break in. Entry was gained by prying a window with a screwdriver. Police also investigated a separate 100 theft of pager tools from a residence.

City council approves nine year golf lease extension

Woman convicted in alien smuggling case near Richardson
Victoria Garcia Vega 37 received four months in prison plus six months probation and a $500 fine for attempting to transport 19 aliens found hidden in her pickup bed on Cienegas Road. She allegedly was paid $900 to haul the group to Fort Worth, while a suspect named Amando Morales Trujillo, nicknamed El Chihuahua, aided the operation. In a separate incident near Eagle Pass Hill, Border Patrol and ham radio operators assisted in locating 30 Mexicans tied to a smuggling ring. 26 were located first with help from a Brackettville operator and others found minutes later. The group was turned over to Mexican immigration authorities.

An 18 year old man, Armando Flores Castro of 206 East Gutierrez, was jailed on a $2500 bond after attempting to loot a Del Rio police officer’s car. Lt. Gua Cuellar reported Castro tried to steal an eight track tape and cash from Cuellar’s vehicle parked at his residence. Castro was arraigned before Justice Felix Barrera.

Deaths John Rogers Johnson 81 longtime Del Rio banker
John Rogers Johnson 81, vice-president of the Del Rio National Bank, died in Val Verde Memorial Hospital after a stroke. He lived at 312 Broadview St and will be laid to rest Friday at 4 p.m. at Humphreys-Doran Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Dr. Frank E. T. Kennedy and Rev. Joe Watts officiating. Burial is in Masonic Cemetery. Johnson served the bank for over six decades, was born August 18, 1900, and began at the bank in 1919. He married Myrtle Schubert in 1924. she died in 1977. He was active in the First United Methodist Church and Del Rio Masonry, plus a charter member of the Del Rio Antique Car Club. Survivors include a brother, Pleas Johnson of Phoenix, Arizona, and a niece and nephew.
