Preliminary West Nile virus positives in Arkansas cases

Two Arkansas residents tested positive in preliminary West Nile virus screenings, with samples to be sent to the CDC in Atlanta for confirmation. One patient is from Houston and ill while visiting Arkansas. both are fine and have returned home. The state notes low risk of severe symptoms, especially among the elderly and ill, as the virus spreads from the East Coast to the South and now the West, with seven deaths in Louisiana this year.

Actress Lois Pope donates 2 million to disabled veteran memorial

Lois Pope and her Florida foundation donated 2 million dollars to a Washington DC memorial honoring the nation's 2.3 million disabled veterans. The fund-raising push aims to kick start a 60 million dollar campaign with the memorial planned near the Capitol by 2005 after Clinton signed the memorial into law in 2000. Veterans at the Dallas convention welcomed the donation and urged greater support for veterans' healthcare and rights.

WHO seeks sponsors for Casa de Nifios orphanage project

World Harvest Outreach seeks sponsors for Casa de Nifios in San Salvador to fund a community center day care and orphanage. Land of nine acres is donated but ongoing costs are about five thousand dollars monthly. John Compton, a Del Rio native now in Pasadena Texas, leads the effort inspired by his nephew Adrian brian of Adrian y Destino who aided quake relief.
