Protesting Gospel Songs At Times Square Club
A Negro religious group protested a Times Square supper club night in front of the Sweet Chariot, singing spirituals to denounce what they called the blasphemous use of gospel songs. Club performers and waitresses answered with their own gospel tunes, drawing theatergoers who split into opposing sides. The Rev. C. S. Stamps led the church group, arguing religious hymns should not be used in such a venue, while the club defended many songs as legitimate Tin Pan Alley compositions.
