Ver Verde County commissioners will be asked at their October meeting to approve a Works Progress Administration application for a nine foot high wire fence along the Rio Grande from the Gulf to the New Mexico line. M L Franks of Eagle Pass urged county judge Clarence Herreford to present the plan to local officials. Other border counties have already approved. The fence aims to protect ranchmen from predatory animals and disease carriers crossing from Mexico, as cattle and sheep losses mount from mountain lions coyotes and virulent vermin.

The Robert Camp murder trial in Brackettville is nearing jury deliberation after the State rested Tuesday. Representative Lon Alsup of Carthage said hundreds of truckloads of hot oil were moved from East Texas to Shreveport. He claimed operators bought oil for 15 cents a barrel and sold it for 70 cents, and that the Railroad Commission could not enforce the oil truck law.

Austin reports Attorney General Willam McCraw collected $60,409 in excess fees from former county officials since January 1. The funds stem from claims by a legislative investigative committee that officials were not entitled to extra mileage on arrests and fees in examining trials and warrants issued before indictments. Although no suit was filed yet, McCraw ordered assistants to pursue necessary court actions against officials and bondsmen.
Austin health officials report malaria cases peaking in August, the highest since 1922. The Department of Health recorded 4,993 cases last month, compared with 6,716 in August 1922, a year marked by malaria and dengue fever outbreaks. Several small dengue outbreaks were noted this year.
Italy’s observations accuse a League of Nations panel of ignoring the Ethiopian case. The Council will decide tomorrow on renewed conciliation efforts. City officials estimate the new San Felipe Creek bridge will open to traffic next week. The seventh concrete slab was poured on Monday and, after final work, traffic should pass over the bridge by Tuesday.
