Fire at 745 am Tuesday damaged the bathroom and a nearby bedroom in the Edwin Laderus residence at 1417 Norto Main, with estimated damage about 100 dollars. Water heater fault noted. Del Hig Refinery manager P H Herteog, who lives there, shut the bathroom door and firemen used chemical extinguishing.
The Central Power and Light Company announces a new rate schedule for Rio area customers. The plan offers a basic charge of 1.8? and a separate pre meter rate for major appliances, with consolidated billing for all electricity use. The changes incentivize customers to use major appliances while excluding light and small appliance users.
The Rev. Conner Jones, rector of the Episcopal Church in Goliad, will assume the rectorate of Rt. Rev. James Episcopal Church in Untis ely November 1. Jones preached in Del Rio recently and the vestry extended a call. He fills the vacancy created when Rev. P. J. Stahknecht left in June for St. Marys in Bellville.
The Southern Pacific Times inaugurated their store-door delivery service here Monday under contract to a local drayman. The service is operated by the Southern Pacific Transport Company, a railroad subsidiary, and serves Uvalde and other points along the line.
Brady hosts a meeting of Highway 10 boosters seeking federal designation for the Denton to Del Rio route. Del Rio members absent, but county interests monitor. Discussion covers designation as No 10 and connections to Fort Worth Denton and planned Panhandle Mexico City corridor.
Austin Sept B. Ur Assistant Attorney General Rice Tilley today sent a communication to the adjutant general of the United States Army protesting gasoline sales to army units without collecting the State tax. The state claims exempt gasoline used for private and government cars is being sold at army posts in San Antonio. Tilley proposes tax exemption only for gasoline paid directly by the government.
The first day of fall opened with overcast skies and no rain expected this week by the local weather office. Day and night were equal in length on Monday, and rainfall this year remains about six weeks below normal.
The Kiddlie Koop Kindergarten opened Monday with about 20 pupils enrolled. Mrs. Stadpey Foster and Miss Johnaiemae Veltzmann direct the program, including dancing as part of the curriculum, in a special school building behind Judge J. J. Poster's home.
J Little and Mrs N C Little of Comstock obtained a marriage license at the county clerk's office. They were previously divorced last fall.
A small tornado swept Port Arthur's eastern suburbs injuring four people and heavily damaging five homes. The storm, from Sabine Lake, uprooted one moon and dropped it into a reservoir. Damages were estimated at 835,000 as rain and lightning accompanied the winds.
The Sacred Heart Church postpones Prof Henry Dreading's organ recital after a detector found a defect. Dreading, a New Orleans musician, delayed the event to ensure first class condition. New date expected early next week with promised music quality.
The Val Verde County grand jury convened at 10 oclock Monday and remained in session Tuesday afternoon. They reconvened at 9 oclock Tuesday morning and were expected to report late Tuesday or Wednesday with several indictments anticipated.
Gim B. A larle for Beaumont urged the State Railroad Commission to include Beaumont in the reduced cotton rate zone to meet truck competition. Railroad officials said they are willing to grant the rate reduction to Beaumont.
Majors C. L. Beaven and Tinker of Kelly Field plan a weekend return from a fishing and hunting trip in the Carmen Mountains west of Villa Acuna. They visited the Carmen Mountain Club last week by automobile and will select a landing field for planes. Beaven is flight surgeon and Tinker is assistant commandant of Kelly Field.
Dr Joli Brinkley, banned from medical practice by the State Medical Board, announced in Topeka that he would run for Kansas governor as an independent this fall. He claims the election offers voters a chance to vindicate his treatment by the board.
Funeral services for Mrs Kate Dunn 41 wife of Frank Dunn were held at the First Baptist Church with Rev M Garner officiating. She died Monday morning after a two year illness at the home of Charles Lockhart. Survivors include her husband and a sister Mrs Logan Biggs of Maricabo Venezuela and a brother Dee Sharp of Coffeyville Kansas. Pallbearers were J McDowell Sellers Stevenson Waldrop Jap Lowe H A Dick Walker and Clifford Owens.
Funeral services for Rev Joseph Gironde 78 retired Baptist minister were held at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning at the First Baptist Church with Rev J M Garner of Kingsville and Rev Bruce Roberta of Carrizo Springs officiating. Rev Grande died morning at his daughter's home Mrs Van Adams after an illness of several years. Pallbearers were J B Moore Wm Strother H H Bilbo JH Fisher BU Speer and C J Harrington.
Two minor fines were assessed in the corporation court Tuesday morning. One defendant was charged with being drunk and disorderly and another with disturbing the peace. Each was fined 1 and costs totaling 12.70 dollars.
Governor Moody lists 12 counties with no action on drought relief from the Agriculture Department. Val Verde Edwards Kin ner Crockett Brewster Upton Reagan Palo Pinto Eastland Real Ward Sutton receive lower rates on livestock and feedstuffs, about one third of normal, while other certifed counties include Runnels Coke Sterling Concho. Washington reports the drought delegation seeking credits. no funds exist but cooperation is pledged by the Drouth Relief Committee.
The Census Bureau reports 3,729,683 running bales of cotton ginned for this year through September 18, up from 3,351,619 in the prior period. Texas shows 1,126,768 bales this year versus 1,362,768 last year.
Stockholm, Sept. 23. Great Garbo, Sweden’s film star, will be 25 this month, friends recall. A Swedish film publication has started to collect reader contributions for a birthday gift, a public celebration embraced more openly in Sweden than in the United States.
Aldrich Van Patten, wealthy credit manager of Armon and Company, shot his wife Maude to death in their Van Patten apartments then killed himself. A friend found the bodies. Neighbors say he had worried over unprofitable investments and issued threats of self harm. Maude was shot in the abdomen and he in the mouth with a small caliber pistol.
Maxwell Byers president of Western Maryland was shot to death in his office in Baltimore. Police say Dudley G. Gray, vice president of the company, did the shooting and is likely fatally wounded. There were no witnesses.
Top lambs sold at 7.75 on the Kansas City market as killing sheep prices held steady. Sheep receipts reached 19 000 with 608 held over, range in 3.25. Cattle receipts 9 000 calves 1 090 and holdover 2 683. Steers and yearlings scarce with yearling prices up about 25 cents. Fed steers steady to firm. Packers slow on medium grass steers. Stockers and feeders ample. Hogs 7 090 receipts, market slow and uneven with 15 to 25 cent declines and a top at 1015.

A Crookston deputy jailer, after arresting three men from Canada on unlawful entry charges, forgot to lock the jail door. The prisoners escaped and are still at large, prompting questions about local naming and security.
The Chicago Rock Island and Gulf Railway petitioned Washington to reconsider ICC approval. The company seeks sole rights for constructing a line jointly with Fort Worth and Denver Northern from Shamrock to connect Rock Island routes. The request aims to alter the joint construction decision.
