San Diego police chief George Sears reports Donald Hazell a 225 pound man confessed to killing Ruth Muir a 48 year old Riverside welfare worker found battered near La Jolla’s surf August 31. He cites psychic spells compelling him to take a life. Authorities will check the confession before charges. Miss Muir served as YWCA secretary in Riverside and was vacationing with her parents from San Antonio.
Rotary Club under Sam H Walk hosts a September 30 fire prevention program. Fire Prevention Week runs October 4 to 11. Fire Chief Frank J Schmidt and the fire department coordinate plans and 3 000 questionnaires will be sent to school children to distribute at home.
The first aid class taught by Dr Thomas M Johnson will meet Tuesday at 7 PM in City Hall with 22 members studying a textbook over 200 pages long. A second class led by Dr Joe J Sanders meets Friday at 7 PM in City Hall.
Rebel army advances toward Madrid with tanks and planes, eight miles from Maqueda and 40 miles from the capital, as government troops retreat. broadcasts urge surrender to Madrid, while government planes bombard Talavera de la Reina after its capture.
In Philadelphia a motorman named William Reiner found his trolley pole removed from the overhead wire by a passenger. Returning to the front, he discovered his change box missing eighteen dollars.
LATE NEWS Montevideo reports Uruguay severed diplomatic ties with Spain after anger over the reported execution of two sisters of the Uruguayan vice consul in Madrid. In San Antonio, election prospects for Representative Robert E. Calvert to the House speakership appeared assured as several representatives-elect pledged support and Calvert claimed pledges from 80 House members.
Willie W. Waterhouse, 75, one of the last wandering printers, died in San Antonio. A native of Waco, he traveled from Del Rio in 1929 to print across towns, aided by a famed telegram to Theodore Roosevelt that he signed wandering Willie Waterhouse.
A 15 year old Kansas City youth, George Wallace Tindall Jr., confessed crimes from car thefts to Lindbergh Law violations. He was wounded in a Holden gunfight, captured by a posse after fleeing and blamed a spree on money to impress his high school sweetheart Kate Barnett. He led authorities to his foray began Sunday with a stolen car.
Partly cloudy conditions expected tonight in Del Rio and vicinity with a maximum yesterday of 87 degrees and a minimum of 72. The current morning low was 71 degrees and conditions for Wednesday remain unsettled.
Police Lieut. James A. Pyke received a commendation after helping a check forger evade punishment. Facing hardship, two poverty stricken families and seven children sought mercy as a relief check for 1130 dollars was cashed, then Pyke paid the amount himself to resolve the case.
Federal narcotics agents Richard Harbin of San Antonio and D F Robertson of Fort Worth were hurt when a suspected narcotics runner botched a highway trap at a Stephenville bridge. Harbin suffered gunshot wounds to hand and leg while Robertson broke an ankle after being run over. The suspect fled after abandoning his car and a package believed to contain narcotics, later buried near a stream. Sheriff M D Thomas and other officers joined the pursuit. Del Rio police were warned of the suspect, a man previously jailed on liquor charges during Prohibition.
Joseph R Williams watched two cars on a Los Angeles highway from his sun porch and rushed to the scene. He did not witness a collision. he broke a leg in his haste to inspect the unfolding event.
Erich Lengefeld, a San Antonio paper salesman for 12 years, died Saturday in New Braunfels and was buried Monday at Kyle. A native of Germany who arrived in the United States at age 15, he had long visited Del Rio selling to stores and businesses. He made his home in Kyle after coming to the United States.
Former King Alfonso XIII hints a return to Spain if rebels win the civil war. He bought 10 road maps in Milian Italy to study his itinerary though he has not fixed a start date. His estranged wife and their ill eldest son are in New York.
The Weather Bureau said there is no alarm in Austin as the Colorado River control is better than forecast upstream. The crest near Austin is expected around 35 feet, far below last June's 417 feet, with the crest now 90 miles above Austin.
Detroit on September 22 defense motions to dismiss nine of twelve alleged Black Legion members were denied by Circuit Court Judge Joseph A Poole. He ruled there was sufficient evidence for the case to proceed to the jury on charges of kidnapping and murder of Charles A Poole.
In Kansas City on a Sunday Frank L Oatman 67 shot and seriously wounded his wife Eugenia 53 after a dispute over housework and bed making. The couple had agreed she would be the breadwinner and he would handle house duties.
In West Chester on September 2 the Chester County treasurer issued a fishing license to Mrs. Hannah C. Sanderson of Pocopoon Valley. The move marks her 80th birthday and she is the mother of Christian C. Sanderson, noted Chester County poet historian and lecturer.
The Producers Wool and Mohair Co led by B B Wardlaw sold 30,000 pounds of wool to Max Robin for Boston at 28 cents a pound the year's highest Texas price. The firm still has about 250,000 pounds of Pall short wool to sell while recent sales clear warehouse stock.
Thirty five aliens have been taken into custody in Brady during the last week by the United States Immigration Service and border patrol. Aubrey Hudson notes that cotton pickers move from East Texas to West Texas this season, many being aliens who attempt to avoid inspectors. Brady will host seven inspectors for another week while aliens are concentrated at San Antonio for action by authorities and Federal Courts.
