Five cars of raw silk valued around a million dollars moved through Del Rio on Wednesday at noon via the T. N. O. Railroad. The silk, jacked in baggage cars, was en route from Japan to New York. The train ran on a fast schedule, not stopping at small towns along the route.
California wool buying is active with four or more firms reporting purchases of Fall wool. Del Grieve in Solano and Yolo Counties sold wool at 22 to 224 cents, Maxwell in Dixon sold to J. W. Salt Wool Co. at 23 cents, and Joe Daniels of Reno and Bishop negotiates for the same company in Dixon. Israelsky of Napa bought Senator Gordon Falk wool and a small amount of lambs wool at 22 to 23 cents per pound for shipping. Tryon in San Francisco paid 22 and 22½ cents in Solano County and offered up to 23 cents for well grown wool with light shrinkage. Draper of San Francisco paid 22 and 22½ cents.
The National Re-Employment Office at 313 East Martin Street Del Rio lists a dairy hand position. The milker will manage 12 cows near Del Rio, receive good pay and a furnished home with optional garden, details at 212 East Martin Street office.
Funeral services for Luciano Bejarano 68 were held at 8 in Saint Joseph's Catholic Church Chi huahua. Interment followed at Westlawn Cemetery. Bejarano long resident of Del Rio and a prominent shearing captain died Monday after illness. He is survived by his widow four daughters and one son.
National primary results show Senator James Couzens losing to Governor Wilbur Brucker in Michigan. George H. Moses failed to regain the Republican Senate seat in New Hampshire, losing to Governor H Styles Bridges. In Massachusetts, Governor James Curley won the Democratic Senate nomination. New York contested 13 congressional seats were decided. Wisconsin saw Philip La Follette lead in gubernatorial primaries.
In Paknoi a martial law proclamation followed defiant soldiers opposing investigations into the killing of a Japanese druggist. Rebellious Chinese troops refused to withdraw to permit inquiries ordered by Tokyo and Nanking. Japan urged evacuation of Chinese soldiers to speed the probe.
Washington September 16. Frederick J Libby executive secretary of the National Council for Prevention of War denounces a proposal to train CCC boys militarily as another step toward Fascism. Maj General George Van Horn Moseley suggested the plan at Atlanta CCC event. Stephen T Early comments that the President supports CCC under current policies.
Hollywood a barber at RKO Radio Studios John Tringall had pressed for acting work for years. After being signed to a bit in Winterset and warned that makeup would ruin his chances he quit, saying he loses more in free shaves than in salary.
In Corpus Christi on September 16 Texas Rangers raided a local night club. Patrons watched the back room as two dice and blackjack were halted, doors locked, and officers searched the premises. The raid ended without arrests as the crowd dispersed and the club returned to its prior activity.
Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee chairman Joseph Guffey said he is convinced a federal election law violation occurred in Maine and will ask for a recount of the Senate race, where Louis Brann was defeated by under five thousand votes.
Kinney County grand jury in Brackettville returned three indictments on Tuesday. They charged rude display of a pistol, driving a car under intoxication, and embezzlement. R K R McDuff, Spotford trainmaster, was not billed on a murder case arising from the May 25 1936 shooting of Truman Rolen in Spofford yard. Rolen, 35, Del Rio truck driver, had lately lived in Del Rio and worked for a cafe and a local bakery.
Governor Landon, aboard his train en route to Topeka, pledged a sound program of soil and water conservation to the agricultural Middle West. He said the plan would provide genuine employment and conserve basic resources, contrasting with makeshift jobs. a farm speech in Des Moines was expected next week to detail the agricultural program.
J D Thompson manager of Pig gly Wiggly hospital report lists him critically ill at home in Rio Vista Addition after several weeks illness. He suffers pneumonia and his condition is described as serious.
About 3.5 million letters and packets went astray in the Indian mail system in the first six months of the year and were received by the Dead Letter Office. The total mail handled in the period was 585,000,000.
