The Uvalde Leader-News quotes support from other columnists for Stanford Payne to join the Texas Highway Commission. Payne, a two year state legislator, was renominated without opposition in the recent primary and is praised for his fairness, energy, and qualifications. The endorsement highlights his long Southwestern Texas base from Webb County to El Paso and San Angelo as reasons for favorable consideration.
The Rev. L. C. Beasley pastor of the First Methodist Church will serve as toastmaster at the Chamber of Commerce banquet welcoming home Dr. and Mrs. John R. Brinkley and their son Johnnie. Banquet starts Tuesday at 7 30 in the Roswell Hotel with floral decor by Mrs. Elmira Menefee. Guests unable to secure tickets may view decorations 5 30 to 6 30 in the hotel dining room.
Weather in Del Rio and vicinity remains generally fair tonight and Wednesday with little temperature change. Yesterday's high reached 93 degrees, a low of 72, and this morning's minimum is 70. Partly cloudy skies expected with a chance of showers near the coast today.
One man died and engineer J H Kennedy was bruised in the derailment of the Missouri Pacific Sunshine Special near Little Rock Arkansas when it struck a stalled automobile. The train crew and 200 passengers escaped serious injury though fireman Jack Kelly suffered scorched feet.
Enrollment of students began today in the Del Rio public schools. Early reports from elementary, sophomore, and junior classes show enrollment about equal to last year with possible gains in lower grades. New students expected. many transfers reported mid afternoon.
In Austin on September 8 the 45th Legislature debated varied tax ideas to fund old age pensions and to tap federal social security benefits. About half of 181 members responded to Bob Barker’s survey, with calls for changes in natural resource taxes, sales taxes, income taxes, and utilities levies, plus a state tax equalization board proposal and other reforms.
Rebels in San Sebastian refuse governor Antonio Ortega’s amnesty offer and threaten to burn the city and shoot 625 prisoners if terms are rejected. Jose Ortega arrives to negotiate while factional fighting persists at the governor’s palace as refugees flee toward Bilbao.
Anselmo Garcia Barrera a young matador from Mexico City was seriously hurt during a bull fight in Piedras Negras. He stood to greet the first bull when the animal lifted him high on its horns injuring him with a seven inch gash in the lower abdomen and officials report his condition as very serious.
A brief naval rebellion in the Tagus River Harbor was crushed as government gunners disabled two mutinous warships. Six mutineers were killed and nine injured. The vessels were towed to shore and seamen chained. Lisbon placed under precaution.
Del Rio Chamber of Commerce leader Joe Caleyo outlined progress on the Del Rio to Saltillo international highway via Villa Acuna and Allende. He noted Mexican officials pledged cooperation when action proceeds, as directors discussed Del Rio housing and Border Highway plans and a Winter Garden district meeting in Laredo.
Secretary Perkins reports about 7.5 million workers found private or government jobs since March 1933 low. Nearly 6.5 million in private industry and 3 million in government- provided work, with wage gains and progress in durable goods and labor legislation noted.
Bob Willis caught a 40 pound catfish Monday night just above the highway bridge on Devil's River. The big catch was reported by local anglers and adds to a growing tally of river trophies this season.

William C. Repast of Houston delivered the keynote at the Democratic convention praising Roosevelt Garner and Allred. He denounced Republicans as “economic murder” and urged Texans to back the national administration. The speech drew about two thousand attendees amid cheers and protests over labor and legislative reform proposals.
Incumbent M B Walcott was declared winner by 31 votes in the Democratic nomination contest for county leader of Uvalde County. Bob Davis trailed by two votes in the first primary. Grady Lowrey, special judge of Del Rio, handed down the decision in Uvalde Monday. Davis’ attorneys gave notice of appeal.
The Spanish government disavowed responsibility for the August 30 attempted bombing of an American destroyer off the Spanish coast. Madrid said no loyalist planes were present near the scene at that time in a note to the American Embassy.
The Winter Garden District Fireman's Association meet in Carrizo Springs drew 45 firefighters from Asherton Crystal City Carrizo Springs and Del Rio for an all day drill contest Del Rio won first in the Liberty Cup and one man races while Carrizo Springs led the pumper races Del Rio entrants included Roy Chastang Cilifton Boies Bruce Bradley Earl Scuddy Austin Waller and Chief F P J Senmidt
