The Morro Castle passenger liner burning eight miles off Asbury Park near Jersey coast left 193 dead or missing hours after the blaze began in the library. Rescue ships saved hundreds, with 360 of 503 aboard accounted for alive. Coast guard and ships towed the hulk toward the shore as crews battled flames.
Del Rio residents remain on edge after a phantom burglar prowls at night. Jack Coats, hearing activity near a window, readied a gun to protect his family and even shielded the baby’s ears before discovering the intruder was a neighbor’s thirsty Shetland pony at the screen.
Chief Harry Altman announced a barbecue for all firemen at the fire hall Tuesday evening starting at 8 o'clock. The department is urged to attend.

Secretary Roper of the commerce department announced an official investigation into the burning of the liner Morro Castle, seeking to determine causes and assign responsibility.
San Felipe Independent School District reports 868 pupils enrolled by Friday end. School No. One has 456, School No. Two 168, and the high school 244. Supt. Carlos E. Castaneda expects about 1,200 pupils by September end as cotton pickers and families return.
New York on September 8 reports welterweight title bout between Barney Ross and Jimmy McLarnin postponed to September 15 due to rain. Mick conditions cited as cause of delay.
The Texas House of Representatives passed a bill to issue $6,000,000 in state relief bonds and appoint the State board of control as the relief disbursing agency by a 100 to 16 vote. In Washington the textile strike expanded to upholstery drapery carpet and rug plants.
Superintendent Roy M. Andrews released the list of 48 teachers in the Del Rio Independent School District. Six new regular staff members include Grace McMillan and Royal D. Metcalf among others, with assignments across Del Rio High School, Junior School, Central Elementary, North Heights, West End, and a colored school.
Concrete footing for three bents on the San Felipe Creek bridges under construction by L A Turner has been poured. The bridges over the east and west forks of the creek on Highway No 3 will use reinforced concrete with seven and five girder spans. Turner was awarded the contract for about $35,000.
An unidentified elderly Mexican prospector was found dead on the Lee Whitehead ranch in Vinegarone country. Sheriff Steinmetz Judge Thurmond and Lupe Diaz stated death was natural after a three week interval with no signs of foul play. The body was buried on the ranch by Lupe Diaz the Del Rio undertaker.
Del Rio Independent School District Superintendent Roy M. Andrews outlined goals for moral and educational standards. He urged teachers to set high personal conduct, provide real life preparation, and emphasize disciplined drills in fundamentals and language plus expanded vocational education. Two teachers absent. replacements named as needed.
The Sheep and Goat Raisers Association of Texas schedules its annual convention for December 5 and 6 in Del Rio. President T A Kincaid and executives discussed government action on unsold wool, pricing controls, and potential buyback or storage support while noting rain shortages across the sheep country.
M B Hodges division engineer of this highway division since its organization has been transferred to the Yoakum division of the State Highway Department. Mrs Hodges left Thursday for Yoakum and Hodges will leave early next week. W D Dockery son of Mrs H W Dockery of Del Rio has been transferred to this division and is expected to arrive with Mrs Dockery and their daughters Maude Alice and Jane about Tuesday from Atlanta Texas.
A city bond election reports 135 votes cast by 2 p.m. The voter list shows 600 eligible names. Polls close at 7 p.m. Local election officials tally results after closing.
