Paris sept 7 France moved toward a new world disarmament effort as the cabinet drafted a national defense bill providing for 4 200 000 000 francs for 1937. The action responds to Germany doubling conscription and France pledged to take the lead at the League of Nations meeting in Geneva this fall for a general convention on limitation and controlled reduction of armaments.
A fast moving blaze in Cushing Texas gutted a hotel three restaurants and two bakeries totaling six structures. Mrs Ida Bradley and her son Josh Bradley were trapped in a hotel and leaped from a second story window injuring the woman’s back.
U S Naval Academy midshipman George Netts visits Del Rio with his parents and brother Jimmie after returning from a practice cruise that carried him to England Sweden and France. He served aboard the Oklahoma until Spain turmoil forced transfers to the Wyoming and Arkansas. Netts plans to resume studies September 25 beginning his second year.
In Wichita Governor Alf Landen calls for a strong will for peace and intelligent legislation to lessen the danger of entering a war. In Fort Worth fears surround the state Democratic Executive Committee as it canvasses runoff results and the child labor amendment plank in the upcoming convention, with Governor Allred backing the plank and many allies opposing.
A photostatic copy of an 1847 letter in Gen Sam Houston’s bold hand is owned by Abe Debaghi and B B Ferguson, Huntsville restaurant owners. The letter to Col Joe Hillis from Pleasant Lawn mentions sending Black Joshua to fetch Mrs Houston to Raven Hill and hints at viewing a new property near Huntsville. It notes Houston’s intention to visit with Ellis and the judge and mother to see the ladies.
The Del Rio public schools opened with a 9:30 a m faculty meeting in the high school auditorium led by Supt R M Bankhead. He welcomed new teachers and thanked staff for last year’s cooperation as Mrs L B Gilbert urged duty to students. Registration and first day schedules for students across grades are set for Tuesday at North Heights Central West End and Junior High with detailed times for each grade and transferring pupils.

Fighting concentrates on the highway near Ancho, Pasajes with militiamen retreating from Irun among Trincherpe’s defenders. France faces rising neutrality tensions as communists push for a one hour general strike to back the Spanish government.
The body of Ruth Muir, murdered in La Jolla California, moved by train via Del Rio on the eastbound route to San Antonio. Accompanied by her parents Mr and Mrs Joseph Muir of San Antonio, the casket was due in San Antonio at 3 20 p m Monday with funeral services at St Pauls Episcopal Church at 4 p m Tuesday. burial at Mission Burial Park.
A May voyage over the North Atlantic aboard the Hindenburg led Miss Helena Lessy of Peoria Illinois to wed Commander J Murray Thornton US Navy in New York. The couple met at the table of Commander Eckener during the first meal of the eastward voyage from Lakehurst New Jersey.
A Brotherhood of Railway Signalmen special meeting was held Sunday at the St. Charles Hotel Del Rio with 15 Houston members in attendance. L Y Ballard general chairman of the Southern Pacific Atlantic System reported on the national convention in Chicago August 17 21. The meeting included a general business session and HQ in Houston. Several members were accompanied by wives or daughters.
Del Rio committee chair Joe Caleyo reports Mexican Rotary Clubs and Chambers of Commerce in Saltillo and Monterrey will cooperate on the Villa Acuna Salillo project. Officials met Governor Jesus Valdes Sanchez and Secretary Jose de la Luz Valdes, who promised future consideration though funds are already allocated.
The Val Verde Wool & Mohair Co sold 125000 pounds of mohair to BE G Wentworth for the Boston firm R P Collins. Brown hair brought 55 cents a pound and kid hair 65 cents. Prices mark highest in Del Rio since 1928 1929 boom. Buyers Tom Richey and W J Fields Jr report large remaining holdings and future deliveries.
Del Rio residents without banquet tickets may visit the Roswell Hotel from 5:30 to 6:30 PM Tuesday to view elaborate Brinkley decorations. The dining room is themed in an aerial motif with blue skies and a miniature plane hanging over the table, crafted by Herman and Ernest Lee Wehner.
The United States Weather Bureau warned of a tropical disturbance off Puerto Rico likely moving west and west northwestward with gales in a small area. Caution was advised for vessels in the storm's path.
