Two railroad engineers were killed in a collision five miles west of Grand Summit Kansas Sherman Leighty a Santa Fe engineer and father of Mrs. Martin Johnson African explorer and J I Hanson Chanute the engineer of the pusher engine died on the way to the hospital Two other engine men were injured The pusher engine went wild down a hill after a freight helper The cause of the collision remained undetermined Only one passenger on the train was injured.
A tropical disturbance near Nassau off the Florida coast was spotted by the U S weather bureau. The center lay about 80 miles northeast of Nassau moving northwest to west-northwest at six mph with winds strengthening to hurricane force over a small area near the center. It was expected to pass Grand Abaco Island late Thursday, with vessels cautioned in the northern Bahamas.
Mayor Thomas M. Johnson and City Commissioners urge Del Rioans to vote for the $62,009 PWA bond issue to rebuild San Felipe water works with a $78,000 grant and $16,000 grant-in aid. About 200 Local No. 2065 members of the United Textile Workers attended a mass meeting on East Montgomery Road to support workers who left the Houston Textile Mill Tuesday morning. Houston labor leaders George Wilson H Winkler Leroy Williams and A S Weaver were present at the gathering.
Late News reports the House approved a bill to issue state bonds to aid the needy and place disbursement oversight with a state board of control. The move supersedes a previous nine member board, while an attempt to appoint the new commission to James V. Allred failed.
City Commission accepts tax rolls and adopts the 1934 35 budget setting total Del Rio valuation at 5 373 020 with 3 982 975 on real estate and 1 390 045 on personal property. Taxes total 80 595 30 at 1 50 per 100. general fund 26 865 10 street fund 21 492 08 interest and sinking 32 238 12.
Denison Texas loses Dr. Alex W. Acheson 92 founder of Denison and its first physician. He served as mayor four terms and was a Republican candidate for governor in 1906 and for the U.S. Senate in 1916.
Joseph Connery of Belfast was arrested for kidnapping his wife who had left him to live with her mother.
About 2,000 students across Del Rio Independent School District will report for registration Monday. Supt Roy M. Andrews outlined the schedule with specific times for elementary, high school, and new out of town students. Pupils must bring report cards and book cards, or transcripts and credentials for outsiders.
ROCKSPRINGS Sept. 7 With 27000 available the county started workmen to grubbing on the first five miles of Highway 55 toward Sonora this morning The work was made possible when Texas funds totaling 14000 and county funds of 13900 more were pooled to inaugurate a project which ultimately will cover the 29 additional miles The work is under supervision of Commissioner J L Ballantine in precinct 1 The first work includes surveying grubbing and setting of fence and getting in readiness for other improvements.
Cooperstown report states Eva Coo was found guilty of murdering Harry Wright. The court sentenced her to die in the electric chair at Sing Sing during the week of October 15. The jury deliberated just over two hours.
The general textile strike sees minimal disruption as 266 000 idle nationwide while 5000 workers stay at Houston plants and 16 other sites run normally. President Roosevelt moves to a strike inquiry board to hear charges and seek settlements. Houston reports fights between unionists and non unionists but few widespread disturbances.
Six men crowded into a small roadster were killed in a head on collision with a Waterbury New Haven trolley car in Seymour Connecticut. The victims named were Peter Paulik Salvatore Fara Angelo Garafalo Ignace Palumbo Ignatz Barblis and Stanton Demoisky.

Rogers 45 a newspaper correspondent described as caused by a brutal beating A rumor tied the event to a fight in his apartment before his hospital admission on August 22 Rogers formerly owned the Foreign Affairs News Service and later worked with the International News Service He was a Harvard graduate and a World War I captain.
San Angelo reports the North Star Woolen Mill of Minneapolis bought 70000 pounds of 12 month wool at 22 cents a pound. Sumner Willis bought a car of 12 month wool from J. T. McConnell of San Saba, while advances arc running 16 to 18 cents. The article notes large unsold stock in Texas and New Mexico and cites national wool clip totals for 1934.
An earthquake struck Orelans Ville in Algeria causing five deaths and about 20 injuries. The tremor also damaged nearby towns with several residents reported missing or hurt. Local authorities mobilized emergency teams to assess the aftermath.
Clifford Prather, 22, of Houston, received a 99 year term after a night of deliberation by the jury for the robbery slaying of Willis filling station operator Emmett Walker. District Attorney W. C. McClain had sought the death penalty. the verdict was read at 9 30 a m.
Neal Myers testified he had nothing to do with the death of Marian Mills at Hazel Brown residence on July 10. He said he loved Mills and did not see an instrument used in the death nor the medicine she took, and he described Mrs Brown as white faced and urging him to flee to save his family.
City Hall will be closed Saturday during the bone election. Polls open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voting occurs at City Hall. About 600 Del Ricans appear on the eligible voter list, with 45 Latin-Americans. Voters must render property for taxation and hold a poll tax receipt. Election officials are G. C Poole A Batot O R Weinert and Co D Finegan.
Eight workmen began installing a new pipe organ in Dr. John R. Brinkley’s Hudson Drive home. The organ and equipment arrived from Lawrence Kansas in two freight car loads. Installation is expected to take about four weeks.
