Reported from Miami on September 5 as the storm moved north through Georgia. Officials estimate deaths possibly in the thousands, with 50 already moved and counts ranging from 209 to 500. Veterans deaths prompt calls for investigation into evacuation failures amid widespread destruction and injuries.
Sam Ragland pioneer cattleman of South Texas and longtime foreman of the King ranch died at his sister’s home in Kingsville at 5 a.m. Wednesday. Funeral services are set for 10 a.m. Friday from his Kingsville home. Ragland, a Del Rio ranching veteran, was an executor of the King Estate and had retired years ago.
Funeral services were held Wednesday in Rockdale for John Wesley Hooper a former Taylor man who died in an early morning fire in Rockdale Tuesday. The body was brought to Taylor for interment in the Taylor City Cemetery. Survivors include his widow a daughter Margaret Hooper both of Rockdale his father J C Hooper of Taft and two sisters.
Cooper Haven, 19, died when his car overturned on a Kerrville highway curve Saturday morning. Funeral services were held Sunday at Junction Cemetery. He is survived by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Tom Haven of Junction and a sister Mrs. Bertha McBee of Quemado Valley.
Three ex officers of white Russian armies convicted at Irkutsk for entering the Soviet Union through Manchoukuo as spies were to face a firing squad today in Moscow.
Governor Alfred refused to intervene in the planned execution of W. D. May for the Handley triple murder, set to proceed tomorrow as reported from Austin. Separately, ships near Portsmouth and London rescued hundreds of passengers after maritime incidents with no reported casualties.
Geneva, Sept. 5. Organized labor prepared to take up the Italo-Ethiopian problem as the League of Nations Council referred the matter to private discussions. The council may meet tomorrow to appoint a committee of inquiry. The International Federation of Trade Unions executive committee was to meet to consider how labor can paralyze Mussolini if the League fails. Prime Minister Baldwin called a war cabinet session to discuss Geneva crisis contingencies.
The American reported that John D. Rockefeller Jr. personally intervened to halt Standard Oil’s concession deal for Ethiopian oil and mineral resources. The Ethiopian concession was brokered via the African Exploration & Development Company, a Standard Vacuum subsidiary linked to Socony Vacuum and Standard Oil of New Jersey.
Governor F E W Marland announced parole for 63 McAlester inmates on September 5. A blanket commutation of sentences affected 56 prisoners, while two paroles were revoked, following Warden Roy Kenny's recommendations.
The body of R. F. McCoy 96 a Confederate Home resident in Austin was brought to Rockdale for burial in Lebanon Cemetery. Surviving are his three sons R L McCoy of Houston J McCoy of Temple and Wade McCoy of Rockdale.
Miami reports six ships assisted in the extension voyage of the Dixie rescue, delivering 164 of 364 people to safety. Capt Sundstrom said cutters no longer needed as a skeleton crew remained aboard. Passengers recalled singing for courage amid two nights and three days at sea.
Heavy rains caused high water delaying the Lions District 13 meeting that was to be held Thursday in Del Rio. The postponed district gathering is rescheduled for Thursday evening September 12, with District Governor Buzzy Stokes of Sonora expected to attend. Members include Eagle Pass Carrizo Springs Crystal City Uvalde and Del Rio. Coach Leslie W Cranfill joined the Del Rio Lions Club.
Vernon reports the completion of stocking Vernon Lake with 7 200 fish under Charles Neathery, manager of the project for the Citizens Boys and Girls Club. The lake, revived after abandonment, will serve the club in the future, hosting species such as channel catfish horned pout calico bass crappie rock bass red breast sun fish long eared sun fish blue sun fish common sun fish black bass gaspar ghoul and war mouth bass. Workmen also seized 600 turtles during clearing.
Austin Sept. 5 The Railroad Commission issued notice of a September 16 hearing to consider adopting rules to prevent waste in the Mauritz field located in Jackson County.

R M Bankhead elected Del Rio Independent School District superintendent for a two year term at a board meeting. Resignations accepted include Roy M Andrews and three staff members. Janie Micou and Elizabeth Stout also resign. E C Wellborn to replace Bankhead as elementary and junior school principal. teachers institute set for Saturday at 9 am in the high school auditorium.
President Roosevelt announced a reduction of emergency government agencies stating the peak of domestic crises is past. He then received a report from Postmaster General Parley, chairman of the Democratic national committee, that things are all right.
Coast Guard officials at New London announce the auxiliary schooner Edith T. was floated off Lynde Point Lighthouse and, with two patrol boats, moved to West Mystic shipyard. No damage reported.
A check for 557,694.55 was received as the state share of the inheritance tax on the M F L Yount estate. The tax collector's fee was one dollar and the county judge's office received 39 for handling. The amount is described as the largest ever handled by the local tax assessor's office.
Miss Lois Cheen was charged with murder after allegedly beating her mother 76 year old Nettie Green to death with a candlestick holder. The acting coroner ruled the death a slaying and the daughter was found in a gas filled room yesterday and labeled as having attempted suicide.
In Fulton Missouri Dr Ralph Hanke superintendent of state hospital No 1 for the insane says permanent waves facials and eyebrow dressings lift patients from blues. A barber shop for men is being installed as part of a program to restore pride and interest in patients.
Rio Grande climbs surge to twenty four feet prompting flood warnings and emergency measures. Local officials urge residents near riverbanks in Texas and New Mexico to prepare for possible evacuations as waters advance.
Severe storms drenched West Texas causing rivers to surge over 24 feet at the international bridge and cover highways. Floodwaters ripped up two highway bridges and 10 railroad bridges as the Rio Grande and Pecos River swelled, with rainfall totaling 10 to 15 inches in the past day.
Officials of the Southern Pacific report high Rio Grande waters pass El Paso Saturday but not yet reach Devil's River near Presidio. Washouts west of Del Rio suspend the 7:30 p m west bound and 10:30 a m east bound passenger trains until bridges are repaired. A mixed train operates between San Antonio and Del Rio to carry mail baggage express and passengers. The service runs about 5:30 a m to Del Rio and 10:30 a m back to San Antonio.
Heavy rains drenched the Juno and Dry Devil's River country with up to nine inches in 24 hours. Two thousand cane bales were saved. Lozier Canyon washed out 200 feet of dirt fill. Highways 3 east of Del Rio and 30 to Sonora closed. Las Moras Creek flooded Highway 5 to Eagle Pass.
