T L Drisdale, director of purchasing in Val Verde County, said no further orders were received Wednesday. Applications for animal purchases were still being filed, with no truth to rumors that ranchers must deliver pelts. Applications are summarized in Val Verde, sent to College Station, then Denver for state and county quotas before buying can start.
Austin report states a bill to issue 9.5 million dollars in state relief bonds to match federal grants was submitted to the House. Rep. Harold Kayton, committee chair, says the measure allows only bond issuance and that amendments on Relief Commission personnel and policy will be discussed. Up to a hundred amendments are expected.
CANADIAN SEPT. 5 There will be no celebration but many old timers discuss one of the last great Indian battles in the Panhandle. The 60 year old fight occurred September 12 between the Washita River and Gageby Creek, Canadian and Miami. William Dixon Amos Chapman scouts and four enlisted men in Company M Sixth Cavalry were surrounded by 125 Kiowa and Comanche and battled for 48 hours while carrying dispatches from Gen. Miles camp on McClellan Creek to Fort Supply Indian Territory.
In Texas Democratic primaries 11 of 31 veteran senators and representatives failed to win renomination or retirement reshaping the Old Guard. Archie Parr of Duval County lost, while T J Holbrook of Galveston becomes Senate dean. Several incumbents and one house member announced retirements or were defeated, with many newcomers entering the 44th Legislature.
Goldsboro North Carolina September 5 Reverend R H Askew a 28 year old four square gospel evangelist charged with attempted extortion for a kidnaping hoax confessed to the act last month and was released on a 5000 bond. He had written notes to his wife and Aimee Semple McPherson demanding 25000 ransom and threatening to blow up Angelus temple. Federal agents signed the warrant.
Three men abducted J. H. Carter president and his wife from their home and tied his children to a bed before looting Palmetto Bank in Lake City, South Carolina, of about $100,000. They found cashier Fred Sterley at the bank, unlocked the vault, and fled with the cash, releasing the Carters unharmed.
A coupe stolen from the Apache Packing Company in San Antonio was found abandoned on Del Rio streets by Sheriff A F Steimetz and returned to the company Tuesday. J C Kane of the San Antonio firm traveled to Del Rio to recover the vehicle. No clues to the thief were inside the car.
SAN ANTONIO Sept 5 Pack Train No 7 an army mule unit will move from Fort Huachuca to the Grand Canyon south rim to haul supplies for a CCC company in the canyon winter camp. The 14 member crew includes a pack master cook cargador blacksmith and 50 pack mules 14 riding mules and a bell mare. The eight mile trail to the camp is treacherous with sleet and snow and past mules have fallen into the canyon.
State Park Board Chairman Colp and aides visited Del Rio to review three candidate sites for a new park. Two sites lie along Devil's River and one on San Felipe Creek, with preliminary sketches by Colp Ayers and DeLonge to be shown to Val Verde County residents for approval.
The Park Committee of the Chamber of Commerce chaired by Dr. B F Orr selected six sites for improvements including better fishing facilities a public swimming pool picnic grounds with barbecue pits and shelters chaired by Colp inspected Tuesday.
Del Rio volunteer and paid firefighters backed a proposed state pension bill. Fire Chief Harry Artman noted past insurance premium allocations to the general fund offered little benefit, urging funding to pay pensions after 25 years of service. The plan would levy 2.6 percent on fire insurance premiums, earmarked for a pension fund.
A training camp will be constructed in Palisades Park near Amarillo to train 225 to 250 unemployed men in vocational work. W B Bowden, Texas Transient Bureau divisional director, said the camp will offer educational and vocational programs and provide a respectable living while men seek jobs.
In Nurnberg on Sept 5 Adolf Hitler announced that the national socialist revolution is ended and fulfilled its aims. He warned against permanent revolutions causing chaos and praised the Nazi leadership as best suited to build the nation after the movement’s claimed success.
Amarillo reports Judge W. R. Ely of the Texas Highway Commission told representatives from 26 Panhandle counties that gaps in the Panhandle highway system will be paved by the Texas Centennial year. He said connected highways will be formed as funds allow and that many problem sections will be completed to lift the Panhandle out of the mud.
In Norman Oklahoma Hazel Brown a house cook testified as the State's star witness in the Neal Myers murder trial detailing how Myers brought Marian Mills to her home on July 8 to prevent maternity. Brown said she reluctantly allowed the visit and the girl took a so called quack medical remedy before dying July 10.
President Roosevelt moves to appoint a three member mediation board to inquire into the textile strike. He plans no other federal interference while employers plan defense against intimidation claims. Reports show rising strikers and idle workers across 22 states with about 250 000 idle of 650 000.
In a terse statement the official urged cooperation and signaled willingness to compromise to satisfy the President's aims. The reply comes amid ongoing talks with lawmakers over key policy priorities and legislative timing.
Houston Textile Company mill enters a second day of enforced idleness as striking workers continue picketing the entrance, preventing any work. Other Texas mills remain unaffected by the strike.
Funeral services for Walter C. Freeman 80 father of C. B. Freeman of Del Rio were set for Wednesday at 4 p.m. at the family home 425 Carson Street San Antonio with Chaplain Ora J. Cohee officiating. Interment followed in National Cemetery. Freeman died suddenly Tuesday morning at his home his Del Rio son traveling to San Antonio after notification. Survivors include his widow Felicia Freeman four sons C. B. Freeman Del Rio William F and Johnny S Freeman a daughter Mrs. T. B. Martin and 13 grandchildren.
Memphis dispatch September 5 4 One Hall County farmer J C Neeley reports his cotton largely escaped drought damage. He shows stalks near waist high and aims to harvest 15 bales from 30 acres noting plants have stunted growth but formed squares and blooms despite drought.
Austin action by the House revenue and taxation committee approves a bill to remit penalties and interest on taxes of all political subdivisions delinquent as of August 1. The measure aims to ease tax burdens for local governments and agencies.
