At the Del Rio Chamber of Commerce meeting a plan is discussed to build a road from U S Highway 96 to the Pecos High Bridge and to mark the route. The aim is to feature the bridge on the border highway and boost tourism, making it a popular stop on U S Highway 90 once completed.
Firemen responded to a bath room stove fire at Mrs Lula D Carner’s residence on South Main. They removed the stove without damage and extinguished the blaze, marking the department’s first call in 28 days.
Del Rio area reports Devil's River crossing on US 90 near Delfic as the region's top resort, with drink stand operators estimating over 5 000 people daily during the three holiday days. Mr and Mrs John Cox return from a North and West trip while Ty leaves Del Rio months ago for a cross country journey ending in Texas. Attorney Walter F Jones and Mr Mrs FE Hatton with daughter Mary Helen return from Mexico travels.
MARATHON Sept oe F Buttrill, owner of a ranch 17 miles south of town, shows soil productivity beyond livestock. He keeps 300 stands of bees producing ten and a half tons of honey from spring gathering. On four irrigated acres he grows watermelons, green chili and tomatoes, onions, peaches and apricots, selling produce locally.
Seven trustees were elected Saturday to serve the new San Felipe school district. The vote was light and without opposition. G B Diaz was election judge with J B Rubio and Pedro Jarrera as clerks. Trustees: S Garza C H Gutierrez Adolph Meldomadoc Victor Vasquez Rodolfo Gutierrez Pablo G Flores Andres Cortinas. An organization seeks to have Mexican residents pay poll taxes to vote.
Fort Worth Sept 3 Rebecca Bredley Rogers plans to plead insanity in the fourth attempt to try her for the 1926 robbery of the Buda State Bank. The trial will be in New Braunfels next week with her husband as counsel after earlier verdicts, including a 14 year sentence, were overturned on appeal.
A typhoon swept over the Philippine Islands. The steamer Mayon floundered off Pasacao with 37 crew aboard. nine were rescued and the fate of the rest is unknown. The report notes the disaster as believed deadly.
In Charlotte North Carolina on September 3 the jury panel for sixteen textile strikers charged with murder proved slow to form. A second special panel exhausted with only ten men in the jury box, delaying the trial.
Six Del Rio women were named as candidates to sponsor the local Volunteer Fire Department for a year. The winner will be presented September 12 during a Fashion Show at Greenwood Park. Votes cost one cent each, raising funds for the fire department. Candidates are Inez Ada Armstrong Leona Hutchinson Ivy Dee Newton Elyea Rau Mary Turner and Bertie Taylor.
The Mexican government aims to attract non commercial hunters while restricting commercialized activity. Licenses now cover five types from ten days to one year and deer bear and quail seasons vary. Hunters may carry 100 rounds per firearm and must secure permits from the local Mexican Consul with proper photos.
A fire in Brady Mercury destroyed almost the entire business district early today. A drug store post office Masonic hall and several other buildings were burned leaving extensive damage and disruption in the town.
Judge Georer L. Devenport refused to grant a hearing on Henry Helms motion for a new trial. Helms is scheduled to die in Huntsville on September 6 for participation in the Cisco National Bank robbery in which two officers were killed.
In Geneva on September 3 J Ramsey McDonald of England told the League of Nations assembly that the Anglo American naval arms limitation agreement is not directed at anyone and is not a conspiracy. He said a formal announcement would be made before the current assembly concludes.
Miss Charlotte Mey county school superintendent will give the opening address at Comstock School. The school will open Monday with B. H. Hill serving as the school superintendent after the announcement made today.
President Hoover's law enforcement commission resumes its sessions in Washington after a month’s absence, signaling renewed activity in federal crime oversight and policy discussions.
Mrs. T. P. Fowler and her daughters left Sunday to spend a few days in San Antonio, packing for the trip and planning their itinerary.
In Valor on Sept 2 Dolph Pris coe and C P Spangler announced purchase of the T. H Tacquard farm known as the S J Spence farm six miles west of Sabinal on the south Uvalde Sabinal road for 50575 dollars. The 2027 acre tract includes 900 cultivated acres with a two story residence and large sheds. Water comes from wells and Blanco creek. Matt E Noble leased his 4000 acre land east of Brackettville to B G Stafford of Del Rio under an optional lease to sale. Stafford bought Noble sheep at 8 dollars per ewe and 6 dollars per lamb. The Brackettville land lies east of the city limits with highway access and supports sheep grazing. In Bandera Clara Fenney sold a 610 acre ranch near Medina to Sam Smith for 9612 dollars and 833 acres to W E Hoffett for 12577 dollars. J C Gilchrist of Del Rio closed a 1900 acre Medina River headland deal with G C Frix of San Antonio totaling 23415 dollars.
The Graf Zeppelin, forced off course by a 50 mile wind, rides a gale toward Friedrichshafen near Lisbon. At 3 am it was reported about 300 miles southwest of Lisbon and expected to be off the European coast early today.
Edward Taylor remains unconscious for a sixteenth day at Williams Sanitarium after a fall from a horse. He showed slight improvement yesterday with milk and eggs given via stomach pump. glucose was infused, and water was spoon fed hourly.
A Ford belonging to Miss Leona Hutchinson rolled down a hill into the San Felipe creek below the pump station yesterday afternoon. The owner had left the car momentarily and it slid into the water, covering the hood but causing no damage.
Members of the Masonic lodge in Del Rio and their families attended an annual picnic at the Country Club grounds on Devils River Monday. About 125 people shared ample food and informal talks, with several men playing horseshoes while visitors like J. D. Brooks spoke briefly. plans for 1830 July 4th events were discussed.
Julian LaCrosse sold the J. R. Bourland home in Garden Parks to Jack McDuffy for 82800. McDuffy recently moved here and is with the Adams Motor Company. The deal was arranged through Slanford Payne.
A nationwide United Press survey shows at least 165 people died during the Labor Day weekend while traveling on beaches and highways. Three deaths were reported in Texas with several injuries. Names include Glenxe Rivero of Monterrey and Charles Sagi Antes, killed in crashes. one more fatality near Ary when a car overturned.
Washington dispatch reports a committee appointment from oil operator Peed Strang of Port Worth to probe federal and state affairs. Chairman Groonkhart says the matter will remain confidential as names and alleged affiliations are considered.
Funeral services for Aunt Emma Gall held at the Methodist church for colored people in Del Rio. Large turnout of white friends attended. She lived 48 of her 82 years in Del Rio and was well known to local white residents. Interment followed at West Lawn cemetery.
About 700 head of dairy cattle have been tested since Dr A H Hughes, assistant State veterinarian, arrived. Very few reactors were found, according to City Health Officer 677. Hughes and assistants are testing privately owned cows and expect to finish by Saturday. Results will be known Thursday after a three day testing period.
Del Rio’s Snag Laughlin, a transfer from the freshman squad, is listed among new men for the 1929 Texas Longhorns football season. He will depart soon for training as Coach Littlefield calls the initial squad. Laughlin’s eligibility mix kept him with freshmen last year, but a strong last year at the university is expected to boost his chances of making the varsity.
Stock market report from Kansas City cattle and sheep sales notes cattle numbers near 12 000 calves 1600 and holdovers 2114 with steady trends in native steers and fed cattle while vealers and light calves weaken. Steers top at 1525 and choice vealers up to 14 59 with sheep showing general steadiness and lambs at 13 50 to 13 25 for Colorado range and western origins.
