Texas authorities investigate claims that I L Southerland and Ovid Mathis, both from Little Rock, were wrongly jailed for the First National Bank of Atlanta Texas robbery. The case ties to bank robber Charley Chapman who allegedly admitted the setup to clear the pair. Southerland and Mathis were convicted in October 1934 and affirmed in May 1935.
Austin May 31 Four Texas livestock raisers gain a new tool to fight rustling through a law authorizing a special tax to fund extra officers. Counties with high livestock renders can levy up to one percent on sheep and goats and five cents on cattle, subject to election approval. Governor James W Allred signed the measure, joining other anti theft laws increasing livestock theft penalties from four to ten years.
A Los Angeles woman, Mabel E. Seely, 42, leaped from the Colorado Street bridge in Pasadena, becoming the 76th person to die by self action in 20 years. She left a note saying the inner conflict caused her exit. she fell 158 feet after driving onto the bridge in a near new coupe.
Members of the American Legion conducted Memorial Day services at Westlawn Cemetery at 5 30 PM. District Attorney Julian LaCrosse delivered the Memorial Day address What Memorial Day Means to Us. The Rev C Beasley and Rev Burton Johnson offered prayers. Graves were decorated and Taps sounded by Fred Gilbert and Adolph Narducci.
Texas reported 23 dead over Memorial Day weekend as the national toll nears 200. Washington leaders said all disputes over the 1.5 billion relief bill were settled except the earmark for highway construction, with an agreement expected soon.
In San Angelo on May 31 Senator E M Davis of Brownwood argues police dogs kill livestock and cites Brown County losses. He describes a bill allowing counties to register dogs and pen them at night and permit poison meat with notice, while noting fox and wolf hunting concerns and citing cattle and sheep deaths by roaming dogs.
In Austin on May 31 the Senate criminal jurisprudence committee planned to study its procedure on a bill repealing pari mutuel wagering. A failed motion to refer the bill stalled action, while the House showed momentum to act and began debate on outlawing race betting amid sharp exchanges.
Jimmy Mills Del Rio commission buyer says he purchased 4300 mutton lambs and aged ewes from four Del Rio ranchmen in recent days. Purchases were at 6.5 cents a pound for mutton lambs and $2 per head for aged ewes. The stock will be shipped to Illinois and California this week to pasture.
Funeral services for Mrs Mary Ann Wilson 81 widow of W H Wilson were held Saturday afternoon at the Barker residence Del Rio after 11 Friday night she died. She resided in Del Rio about 20 years previously living in Nueces county near Live Oak born November 29 1855 to John and Susan Rutledge Shely survived by three sons three daughters ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren three brothers and a sister. Activities included J T Bunch and J E Blankenship as pallbearers.
May 31 report says German warships bombed the Spanish port of Almeria in retaliation for the Deutschland attack. Germany withdraws from the London non intervention committee and demands satisfaction. Spanish casualties cited include 19 dead and 55 wounded with significant destruction. Italy backs Germany. Barcelona reports an Italian submarine torpedoing a Spanish liner with 50 drowned.
About 400000 pounds of Texas wool sold in West Texas on Saturday with prices from 30 to 37 cents per pound. Buyers include Albert Schneider and Nelson Johnson who purchased 80 000 pounds from J T Davis at just under 36 cents and a 12000 pound lot from Mrs Frey Baker. Other firms and individuals across Sterling City, Water Valley, Draper, Mason, Dallas and Fort Worth reported active sourcing, with consignments from 1937 wools selling in Boston and purchases by J M Lea, G C Magruder, Mason Ware house Association, and others. No wool news from New Mexico.
Mr and Mrs V M Bowen of San Angelo are visiting in Del Rio as guests of their son and daughter in law Mr and Mrs Virge Bowen. The senior Mr Bowen is 84 and this marks his first visit to Del Rio. The senior Mrs Bowen has visited before. They plan several days in Del Rio before returning home.
