Paris reports the French government failing to break a 60,000 metal workers strike. More workers quit as labor leaders refuse to order a general strike. Strikers at each factory were told to talk terms with individual employers before yielding.
The Queen Mary on a New York voyage broke the Princh Normandie's 24 hour run record by reaching 747 miles by noon ship time. The Normandie's best Westward day was 744 miles, set previously.
Dr and Mrs John R Brinkley depart Galveston by yacht for a three month voyage along the East Coast Atlantic Pacific routes and Caribbean waters. They will visit Tampico Mexico Cuba West Indies Bermuda and Florida before heading to Nova Scotia by July 1 in search of a library trophy. Accompanying them are their son Johnnie Mrs Brinkleys brother Dr T L Jones and G A MacDonald with return planned September 1.
Sixty nine students from Del Rio Junior School were promoted to high school at Thursday evening exercises in the auditorium. Rev. L. C. Beasley delivered the address with three life pictures while awards and certificates were presented by Supt. Bankhead and Malcolm Logan.
The State Tax Board fixed preliminary assessments totaling 85,380,815 on tangible values of railroads toll bridges and oil pipelines an increase of 8,682,000 over last year’s final assessments.

In Dunkirk New York on May 29 the bodies of two children were found hanged from a bedpost and their mother Mrs Elizabeth Higgins strangled by a quilt. The coroner suspects murder or self inflicted death. In San Antonio Grace Brandon the government's primary witness in Major Charles Shepards 1930 wife murder case was jailed on a lunacy complaint. A lunacy trial is set for Monday by Dr J N Goodson.
In New York on May 29 magistrate Mark Rudich suspended Nick Theodora’s sentence after the defendant claimed he left garbage in a wooden box to feed neighborhood goats. The judge noted he had been offering a daily prize for the best lie told in court and proclaimed Theodora the winner.
Heavy May rains drenched Texas as streams rose toward flood levels along the coast. The Weather Bureau said El Paso had no rain while Dallas reports the Trinity River near flood stage. Guadalupe and San Marcos Rivers were receding.
TOPEKA May 29 Governor Landon today announced that John D. N. Hamilton Kansas national committeeman would place Landon's name in nomination for the presidency at the Republican national convention in Cleveland. Hamilton organizer of the Landon for president committee is a district delegate.
Authorities moved to finish the campaign against the Black Legion as fear-stricken members burned robes and hoods. Prosecutor Dudley Owen said the organization here is broken and remaining members may lack nerve for further violence. Detective Bowen cited a blood-written warning to officers to lay off the group.
R. H. Hurd travels to Martinsville Virginia to attend funeral services for his mother Mrs. Charles Robert Hurd 65 who died suddenly at the family residence. Mrs Hurd a lifelong Virginia resident born 1871 in Henry County underwent an operation but died shortly after. Survived by husband four sons Dewey Tillman Charles D and R H of Del Rio two daughters Frances Voss and Mrs Eugene Copeland all of Martinsville.
New York May 29 Dr H E Ewing of the United States National Museum says monkeys groom each other not for vermin but to nibble loose hairs. He cites fellow scientists and Science Service remarks as he rules out skin flakes salt crystals and other ideas. Jocko specifically pulls and nibbles a loose hair on a mate’s back.
Washington May 29 Colonel Joseph McMullen of the ad vocate general department was summarily dismissed from the army after the District of Columbia Supreme Court convicted him of giving legal advice and assistance for compensation to a firm opposing a tariff bill in Congress.
Brig. Gen. George R. Spalding, then army division engineer in New York City, was promoted to assistant chief of staff in charge of the supply division. He will assume the post June 1, succeeding Brig. Gen. Charles E. Lincol, who is awaiting retirement from active duty.
