In Stettin on May 27 twenty-five Communists and Socialists were sentenced to prison terms from three months to five years for distributing forbidden political literature. They were found guilty of connections with German emigrants abroad sending reading material.
Fifteen states confront growing labor discord as wage and commission demands spark actions. In Dallas drivers stage nationwide walkouts halting up to 90 percent of metered taxis, with several incidents of passengers forced from cabs and arrests during protests. About 30,000 workers are reported on strike as peace talks stall.
Superintendent Bankhead announced Arthur Reinhart valedictorian with 92.81 average and Wilfred Jeanette Johnson salutatorian with 92.69 average. Both will receive college scholarships. Reinhart eyes heavy science program, Johnson majors in English. Graduation set Friday at 8 15 p m in the high school auditorium.
Police tied the Dearborn township murder of Charles A. Poole to the Black Legion as members wore robes and a “morals crusade” motive was cited. Authorities seized weapons from suspects and numbered leaders named Dayton Dean Harvey Davis Urban Lipps Irvin Lee. Jackson warrants target 25 alleged gang members for kidnapping and assault of a relief worker. Prosecutor Owen Dudley filed charges against three prison guards and other suspects.

Retiring officers listed are Mrs Bertie Harris and A Harris among others.
Amarillo remembers James P. Owen 87 of Afton New Mexico a pioneer who came with Col Charles Goodnight s first cattle herd and worked on Goodnight trail outfits He later joined a pioneering Grand Canyon expedition his death was reported last week in the Texas Panhandle community.
Washington May 27 Democrats on the Senate Finance Committee convened a secret caucus to discuss a presidential tax suggestion presented at a White House conference last night.
Recurring flood fears eased as streams crested and fell today. Buffalo Bayou no longer threatened Houston as the crest passed within its banks. The Colorado River also receded at Austin.
Del Rio Independent School District starts a nine week summer session Monday at 8 am in the high school. Superintendent R. M. Bankhead announces the faculty: Miss Grace McMillan, Harold Ward, Leslie Cranfill, and Mrs. Aubrey Rowland. Tuition is 10 dollars for one course and 15 dollars for two courses, totaling one unit.
Foote's leg and hip injured when a falling limb struck him after bystander Carl Foote paused to assist workmen sawing a tree branch in Oklahoma City. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.
At Aberdeen 8 D on May 27 George Harms named the newborn quintuplet lambs Yvone Ytwo Ythree Yfour and Yfive. The ewe produced five lambs including two rams and three ewes as part of the prize litter.
The C of C board met Tuesday and endorsed the Rotary Club plan to build the Brinkley Public Library. Rotary members O R Weinert H Conger Jones and Joe Caleyo spoke in support. Julian LaCrosse was named membership chair with John Loomis and Charles Russell as members. A new chair, vacated by H L Mann, was filled by LaCrosse. A semi annual barbecue meeting was approved for June or July with activity reports to be shared.
In Miami on May 27 one of 250 flamingos at Hialeah Park laid an egg, the first in five years in captivity. General Manager E R Burch said bird fanciers doubted flamingos would reproduce in captivity. The birds, clipped wings, are decorative in the race track infield.
Washington May 27 The counsel for Townsend Sheridan Downey says I do not honor your subpoena to repost for examination. The House investigating committee will consider the statement in executive session. Chairman Bell expects a decision on the contempt action in a day or two.
Del Rio journalist Miss Faye Dobkins announced her candidacy for Val Verde County clerk in the Democratic primary on July 25 1936. Born and raised in Del Rio she has not held public office before and has worked six and a half years on the Del Rio Evening News developing county contacts and interest in local welfare.
The Court of Criminal Appeals reversed and remanded the Dallas case of Mrs. Ethel Johnson for the murder of her daughter in law Mrs. Bernice Blankenship in Cornell County. Johnson faced a 25 year term. The court upheld death sentences for Glenn Warren in Angelina County and Grady Warren in Smith County and overruled rehearing requests.
Emilio Gaspar Rodriguez Jr. son of the Cuban Secretary of Labor was killed in an auto crash near Colon in Matanzas Province. Inspector Manuel Cue of the Department of Labor and Navy Lieutenant Rogelio Planas were injured in the same collision.
Washington circles say Robert H. Jackson, government counsel in Mellon tax suit, could be the New Deal choice for New York governor after Gov. Herbert Lehman announced non reelection. Jackson, a Jamestown native, is popular with Democratic leaders in the state.
The American Legion Auxiliary asks for flower donations to decorate ex soldiers graves in Westlawn Cemetery for Memorial Day. Flowers should be delivered to the Chamber of Commerce Friday for placement in containers, then used Saturday to adorn the graves. No Memorial Day services are planned.
Roger Gillis president of the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association urged ranchmen to authorize warehouses to deduct 6 cents a day from wool clip sales for the Associated Wool Industries of New York. He said wool is selling rapidly and warehouse managers must receive authorization.
Frances Nalle, Texas Centennial Exposition hostess, arrived by air to invite Southern California to the Dallas fair opening on June 6. She wore a sombrero during a visit to Pickfair and commissioned Mary Pickford as a Texas rangerette.
Prince Aly Khan, son of the Aga Khan and leader of the Ismaeli Mohammedans, married Joan Yarde-Buller, daughter of the late Lord Churston, at the Paris Mosque. The bride had been divorced last year by Noel Guinness, who named Prince Aly as correspondent. The decree was made absolute last week.
Wide Reports Detroit May 27 12 members of the Black Legion charged with kidnaping and slaying Charles Poole were adjourned until Tuesday after Prosecutor Duncan McCrean predicted more arrests within days. Congressional inquiry demanded by Chairman Dickstein to see if the group is connected to Black Shirts or has international ties. Investigators probe activity in Ohio and Colorado.
Rev John Patrick Beaty 80 years old died Tuesday at his daughter's home three miles east of Del Rio in the Waterloo community. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 5 pm from the Simpson home with Rev L C Beasley officiating. Interment in West Lawn Cemetery. Surviving are his widow Mary Thomas Wilhelm Beaty and seven children including Mrs W E Simpson and Rev W N Beaty.
A hitchhiking swallow from the West Indies rode into Beaumont aboard the Donaldo after a three day fishing trip. Captain Harry Burch reported the exhausted bird entered the wheelhouse far from land and, as the yacht neared the Sabine Jetties, flew landward from the control room.
The forecast for Del Rio and West Texas calls for mostly cloudy skies with scattered showers tonight and Thursday. East Texas remains cloudy with occasional showers, and the highest and lowest temps from yesterday range around the mid 60s.
