Flames swept the Stock Yards Coliseum in Oklahoma City around noon killing ten people and injuring 12 others. The structure collapsed including wall and roof damage with preliminary hospital reports confirming the fatalities and injuries. Fire crews estimated damage around $300,100 as rescuers continued search at the ruins.
John W Brady was released on a $5.00 bond after Judge Charles Pippen overruled a motion for a new trial. Brady’s attorneys planned an appeal to a higher court from the judge’s decision, maintaining the three year sentence for the murderer terrorizes the case. The case arose in Austin with Meyer and others involved.
Perkins charged with abduction and kidnapping was released from Val Verde County jail on a 2000 dollar bond after about three weeks. Bond signed by Walter JF Jones Robert Moyles and A Holmig. Case stems from claim by Mrs Parks mother of 13 year old Lilian Chastain. Perkins occupied rooms at the Parks home and the Parks have since moved from 308 East Fishth Street.
One fifth inch of rain fell Tuesday with 0.21 inch reported by meteorologist H L Molyneux. Showers were scattered across the city and a heavy rain was noted between here and Devil's River. In Austin on May 27 Clemency for Dreager Pruitt, condemned to die June 4 for the Dallas high school student's slaying, is being sought by Dallas citizens and referred to the State pardon board.
Census released on Tuccuday reveals Exeir Pars population at GIB with a 1300 drop and Ewele Parx's 1957 figure down 708. Kerr County rises to 148 with a 4307 gain while Blanco and Contin Counties show declines. Diem County increases by 35168, and Junction revises to 1435 with Kerrysitle boosted by 2193.
El Paso division athletes placed second at the seventh annual S P L employees track meet in Houston Texas and Louisiana contests. Beaumont won overall with strong showings in every event. Deyai Summit and J A McNutt of Del Rio represented El Paso and excelled in pistol firing with Summit earning third high and others securing top spots.
Rio Grande Valley citrus growers met in Austin and appointed a seven member committee to perpetuate the state quarantine against infected Florida citrus fruit.
An aviator pleaded guilty in corporation court on a Main Street cafe incident. Judge Smith fined him $31.76 with costs totaling 81.70. The complaint, signed by the cafe proprietor, cites indecent exposure from Monday night.
Washington May 27 The Methodist board of temperance prohibitions and public morals denies it operates as a lobbying organization. Research secretary Deets Pickett states the board does not support Methodists for office and has never contributed to political or lobbying causes.
In Austin on May 27 the Court of Criminal Appeals heard GC W. Roberts request a new trial for his wife murder case in Wie County. The defense cites a shooting during an eruption and claims the event was accidental, presenting nine pictographs and target-shot tests as part of the evidence.
Detroit on May 26 reports show C. J. Coates shot three cats that disturbed neighbors at dawn. Police responded after starved sleepers heard three shots, finding three deceased felines as Coates boasted he used three bullets.
Turner heads a Lockheed Air Express flight attempting the transcontinental speed record. The plane will stop at Wichita to refuel, as the crew chases the Foxt-West record set by Captain Frank Hawks.
A night flight over Tulsa ended in the deaths of three people. The wreck aboard a Crarge 8 plane from Carthage Missouri left burned remains of Bushroom Elsa Ball and R W Hammonds. No witnesses reported, cause unknown, ice or post-fall fire possible.
The Kansas City market report shows cattle receipts at 6 000 with calves 1 000 and foldover 351. Cattle and hog markets advance with ped sners and yearlings active and prices up to 26 cents. Sheep receipts total 7 000 with spring lambs 15 to 25 cents higher and best clipped lambs around 10. Arizona spring lambs bring 11.90. natives top at 11.75.
Mrs F M Rose was named president of the Associated Charities of Val Verde County at a Monday meeting. Officers elected include C W Earnest first vice president E K Fawcett second vice president and Mrs M L Barry secretary treasurer. A 148-member board was chosen with My P M Rowe Mrs J S McWhertor Mr Wy BL Weathers bee and others. The group reported care for 168 people across 45 families, with expenditures totaling $6,627.10 for tubercular relief, groceries, drugs, hospital care, rents, clothing, and nursing over the past year.
Several explosions occurred around 6:30 p m Monday at the site of the new high school building as workers attempted to blast away the heavy concrete foundation of the rear portion of the Central School. Holes were bored and charges set off but the blasts failed to achieve the desired effect.
Classification of rural schools was decided at a county board meeting held at the county superintendent of schools office. Several other matters are pending with another meeting planned in a few weeks. Board members present included John Topram Hassie Galloway and Herman Cadena. Houston May 27 A party aboard the three masted schooner Flechas reported a fire off the Brazos River mouth last night with ten Houston residents aboard and wireless messages indicating all safe though the vessel was burning.
Reports say the lone masked robber of a Villa Acuna gambling hall may be Jake H Fleagle, a Colorado bank robber sought in Lamar. Capt C J Blackwell notes Fleagle crossed the Rio Grande early Monday and stayed in Del Rio five to six days. Police circulate a description and warn officers to seek Fleagle, who is about 40, 5 ft 8 1/2 in, 155 pounds, dark brown hair with gray, blue green eyes, and a medium complexion.
Mystery surrounds Catherine Lewis Davis a 16 year old Texas University student from Center who disappeared after leaving home for Norman Oklahoma. Private investigators found no cause for disappearance while her excellent scholastic record remains on file.
Del Rio schedule shows the Cowboys hosting the San Antonio F E F aggregation Friday through Sunday with 4 pm starts and a 1:30 pm Sunday game to avoid the Villa Acuna bull fight. The series serves as warmups before the Texas University clash.
Margaret Ferguson, 17, one of the nation’s youngest girl pilots, died when her plane crashed near Colorado Springs after a solo flight. The aircraft was destroyed and her body severely crushed in the impact.
The Texas law requiring 40 days before canvassing election returns will keep congressman elect Thomas L. Blanton from a seat at the current session. Congress members reportedly refused him a courtesy seat during the interim. Secretary of State Jane McCallum asked the Attorney General to confirm the 40 day period must be observed before canvassing results.
M Hutchinson about 55 died at 2 15 in the afternoon from injuries suffered in an automobile crash about 9 o'clock Tuesday morning eight miles west of Langtry. The Ford coupe rolled several times after a rear tire blew out. Hutchinson was en route to Randerson to work on a high school building contract. He leaves a wife and seven children. Funeral plans not yet completed.
Federal court charges allege Hubert Johnson of Fort Worth violated liquor laws after customs officers seized a Chevrolet truck with 13 cases of alcohol and 10 cases of whiskey and he failed to post a 2000 bond. Another arrest involves Herminegilde Villarea tied to 255 gallons of liquor found near Eagle Pass.
