Washington May 26 Townsend's defiant stance spread as two pension leaders, John Keifer of Chicago and Rev. Clinton Wunder of New York, failed to appear under subpoena. Chairman Bell said they were instructed by Townsend not to testify and the session ended with the same firm stand against Townsend. Bell also called Representative McGroarty, a top Townsend bloc leader, who disclosed bills proposing a transaction tax to fund pension funds.
Democratic lawmakers plan to consult President Roosevelt on the tax bill as the Senate Finance Committee moves to tighten penalties on corporations that improperly accumulate surpluses. Chairman Harrison requested a conference with the President.

A Duluth District Court jury returned a verdict for Harry J Councilman in a 25000 alienation of affections case brought by Charles Wright formerly of Spencer Iowa now of Owatonna Minnesota. The former Mrs Wright is now Councilman’s wife. A separate 20000 alienation suit against the present Mrs Councilman awaits trial.
Socialists led in late returns from Belgium's parliamentary elections as May 26 results came in, with observers predicting a socialist premier would head the new government.

Producers Wool and Mohair Company sold nearly 500000 pounds of Spring wool Tuesday. Wardlaw announced 250000 pounds of 12 month wool at 32.4 cents per pound to Studley and Emory, 150000 pounds of eight month wool at 31.0 cents to A. W. Hilliard & Son, and 50000 pounds at 30.5 cents to A. W. Hilliard & Son. about 1,000,000 pounds remain unsold at the warehouse.
Manila reports Kakai Dagalangit a Moro Datu of Maguing Lanao Province has 30 wives at age about 50. He gained power via his large clan and Moro marriage rites allow polygamy despite Philippine law. He began in his teens and continues yearly fetes with dowry and feast.

Conway Arkansas May 26 Roger W Babson Massachusetts economist warned graduates that another world war could erupt before 1950 threatening Atlantic and Pacific coast cities He urged Arkansans to stay inland avoid seaboard and large cities citing urban famine and rural advantage in a coming conflict.
Good rains were reported falling in the Sanderson and Dryden communities Tuesday afternoon.
Del Rio truck driver Truman Rolen died from a gunshot wound to the abdomen in the yard of a Spofford section house. R. R. McDuff, about 45, was released on $2,500 bond after a 30-30 rifle discharge killed Rolen. A hearing is set for Thursday at 5 PM.
