Dr. Carlos E. Castaneda superintendent of the San Felipe Independent School District will travel to San Antonio for the summer session of Our Lady of the Lake College to teach history. He will continue writing the history of the missions of Texas and plans to return to Del Rio in August with his wife and daughter Consuela.
Delegates from 27 counties arrive in Del Rio for the 21st district convention with 150 to 200 visitors expected. Highlights include a 12:30 p.m luncheon at the Roswell Hotel and a 2 p.m business meeting at the high school auditorium led by Mayor T. M. Johnson.
Marfa Texas May 25 E D Stegall about 55 roundhouse foreman at Valentine dies after brief illness. He came to Texas in 1910 with American railway employes fleeing the Mexican Revolution. Mrs Stegall died two years ago. Funeral services planned in Valentine Sunday.
Firemen quickly extinguished a gasoline fire sparked by a faulty carburetor in a roadster on Dignowity Street. The Del Rio Fire Department used chemical extinguishing agents to control the blaze without reported injuries.
Del Rio area forecast notes tonight and Sunday as generally partly cloudy. Yesterday’s high reached 82 degrees with a low near 69. This morning’s minimum was 67 degrees.
The president vetoed the Patman bonus bill in a joint session with House and Senate members. Behind him are Vice President John N. Garner and Speaker Joseph W. Burns, with Marvin McIntyre at the extreme left as secretary.
W. W. Jackson of West Moorland College San Antonio addresses 38 Del Rio High seniors in the auditorium praising open minds and responsible citizenship. He warns against cynicism urging focus on thinking clearly using time wisely and facing facts.
Maverick County Water Board president Dr. Van E McFarland announced that the Public Works Administration approved the election form for a 1.5 million dollar bond issue. If voters approve on or near June 25, funds would restore and extend the Quemado Valley canal to supply water for the region south of Eagle Pass and power plant needs.
Five year old Hi Eastland Newby son of Mr and Mrs Byron Newby sustained a three inch scalp wound after a somersault mid air struck a door knob. The accident occurred as he moved from one bed to another and he reported no pain afterward.
United States Marshal A J Chitty announced that Eastern gangsters are believed to have kidnapped George Weyerhaeuser, nine, son of a wealthy lumber family, with a $200000 ransom note delivered to his parents. DOJ rushed 15 agents to Tacoma to aid the search. four operatives came from Portland.
Auxiliary members of the American Legion sold poppies on Del Rio streets to honor World War dead and aid disabled veterans. Poppies were ordered from the Veterans Hospital at Legion Texas near Kerrville and funds support Legion and Auxiliary welfare, mainly the local post. The practice began after Miss Moina Michael wore a poppy inspired by Col John McCrae's In Flanders Fields poem.
V A Brown, a well known Rockspring ranch man now based in San Antonio, was reported ill on Saturday. Attending physicians say he will be confined to bed for several weeks.
The American Metal Company of Shafter transported a car of lead concentrate to Carteret New Jersey this week. Fourteen cars of cattle were shipped today from the Hendricks ranch to Abilene.
E. B. Pat Murphy of San Angelo is among the best known Legion leaders and among the most active figures at the Texas convention, attending all major meetings and shaping the organization locally.
Val Verde County ranchers are told that starting Monday government veterinarians will conduct a county wide tubercular test of cattle at Federal expense. The test covers all dairy cattle all bulls and 10 percent of range cattle with court cooperation from the County Commissioners Court and State Livestock Sanitary Commission. Counties failing to test will be quarantined after July 1. Owners may opt to have cattle tagged and should notify the judge if they want tagging.
In Rome Premier Mussolini told the Chamber of Deputies that faith in limiting armaments or banning weapons like gas and heavy arms is futile. Reports from Berne note Swiss customs protested German flight over Swiss territory. In Honolulu the VP-10 squadron completed a 1300 mile nonstop flight from Midway, signaling the arrival of a large naval fleet at Pearl Harbor.
London reports Germany has informed Britain that its rights to hold colonies must be recognized in tangible form by former Allies before rejoining the League of Nations. In Berlin Sir Eric Phipps and Konstantin Von Neurath clarified Germany’s stance on mandates while Britain considers steps to satisfy the demand. Germany seeks 35 percent of Britain’s navy strength but does not want actual possession at present.
W. A. Stigler chairman of the Texas Education Curriculum and Textbook Division spoke to seven San Felipe Independent School District graduates on the secret of success. Dr. Castaneda introduced the program and announced the diplomas to Mario Frausto Fortunato Guerra Raul Valdes A P Rivas Roger Hernandez Georgina Gutierrez Arcadia Barrera. Valedictorian A P Rivas and salutatorian Raul Valdes gave addresses and Guerra read the class prophecy.
Miss Bertha Pool Deal and Mrs Kenneth McConchie sponsored the senior class and helped plan the commencement program held Friday evening with 38 seniors receiving diplomas. They advised the seniors, coached the school play, and junior classes handled decorations and ushers at the ceremony.
