Monkey loose in New York prompts police chase to a riotous crowd that sided with the animal. Spectators cheered the escape as a test of public kinship with beasts amid a city scene dominated by spectacle and strife.
Governor Allred announced taxation will not be on the agenda for the special legislative session convening Thursday. He plans a separate session after a vacation to study the issue, and said race repeal, bookmaking, and dog race betting could be considered if time allows. He praised the House but criticized Senate rules and called the body a "no nothing Legislature."
Burke Rose age 59 died Monday afternoon at his East Academy Street home after a long illness. He served as city sanitary inspector for years. Survived by widow, two children, three grandchildren, and three brothers. Children include Mrs Louis Wooten of Del Rio and Roger Rose of Sanderson. Brothers: Dr FPF M Rose of Del Rio, Landon Rose of Sanderson, and Edgar Rose of Kentucky.
An exhibit of Central School elementary art will run Tuesday to Thursday for parents and patrons. Art supervisor Mrs. Claude D Lane says fourth grade, two fifth grades and three sixth grades will display in Room 12. Viewing hours are 8:30 AM to 3:45 PM.
John D Rockefeller 97 founder of Standard Oil dies at his Winter home in Ormond Beach Florida. Private funeral at Pocantico Hills New York with burial in Lakeview Cleveland. Rockefeller life spans riches and philanthropy including establishing the Rockefeller Foundation and General Education Board.
Famous capitalist John D Rockefeller dies Sunday at his Casements residence in Ormond Beach Florida after a heart condition. He would have turned 98 in July and was buried in Cleveland after funeral services at Pocantico Hills New York.
The Producers Wool and Mohair Company sold 84 000 pounds of long wool to C D Stokes and Dutch Wardlaw announced the sale late Saturday at 38.5 cents per pound. Borger mayor John R. Miller and commissioners Knight and McClelland faced ouster proceedings over alleged irregularities in the April 6 election. Sixty seven lots, all 112 months wool, remain in the warehouse. The quo warranto action was filed by George Finger A Vo Avary and Wayne Okete defeated candidates in the election.
Senator Alvan Adams of Colorado announces a special wool probe committee will meet to review preliminary reports before separate study. The group, created by a 1935 resolution with Senators Steiner Hatch Murray and Walsh, aims for open hearings after investigators finish their work.
Senator Harry H. Schwartz of Wyoming said a June 9 hearing is tentatively set on a bill to require labeling of wool products. The measure by Senator Capper Kansas calls for listing fabric content by percentage and bans using the word wool on labels for fabrics under 25 percent wool. House support comes from Representative John A. Martin Pueblo Colorado.
A Associated Press late report lists a total of 21 deaths in Texas from violence over the weekend including eight from traffic accidents seven from shootings and two from drownings one fall fatality and one explosion. In Cincinnati on May 24 Charles P Howard, secretary of the Committee for Industrial Organization, forecast that about half of AFL unions would not contribute to a war effort against the CIO, noting he was the sole CIO member at the AFL meeting there.
The Supreme Court rules unemployment insurance provisions of the Social Security Act constitutional, affirming Fifth Circuit rulings and aiding the administration. Justice Cardozo delivers the main opinion with Justices Butler McReynolds Sutherland and Van Devanter in dissent on parts. A second decision, 7 to 2, upholds the old age pension provisions, and the court also upholds the Alabama unemployment insurance act.

Rome reports indicate Italy rejects a British proposal to halt fighting in Spain to allow withdrawal of foreign volunteers. Britain’s plan meets approval in some quarters of London and has drawn sympathy from Germany like Vatican and other nations.

Ben F Foster formerly of Del Rio and son of the late Judge Foster is in Los Angeles to investigate a major West Coast case. Foster, a former Del Rio attorney, became assistant United States District Attorney in San Antonio in 1933 and has held his current post since 1936.
Former Del Rio attorney Ben F Foster now a special assistant to the U S Attorney General travels to Los Angeles with Dan E McGrath to examine possible federal violations or misrepresentations in the Pacific Mutual Life Insurance setup. They will base recommendations to the attorney general on their findings. Foster’s career spans Texas law and legislature with a 1936 appointment to the Department of Justice. Mrs Foster, Maydelle Vaughn, accompanied by her mother Mrs Vaughn, plans to join him in Los Angeles after visiting Del Rio and Eagle Pass.
Baccalaureate for the Del Rio High School class was held Sunday evening at 815 in the high school auditorium. Rev L C Beasley delivered the sermon Whither Goest Thou, urging personal development, social contribution, and moral guidance. Music featured a combined church choir with Marion Russell at the piano. lists of senior class members followed.
San Antonio May 4 Plans for completing consolidation of the original 20 Texas WPA districts into 12 administrative units were completed today at the end of a two day meeting of State Administrator Harry P Drought with directors of the 12 remaining districts Val Verde County was added to the San Antonio district.
The president asks Congress for a flexible labor act setting 35 to 40 hour weeks and minimum wages up to 1200 a year. Provisions include banning products of child labor and preventing exploitation of organized labor, plus exemptions for small interstate firms and intrastate businesses. The bill would empower the government to set varying minimums and bar inferior foreign goods from interstate trade.
City Secretary E F Howard returns to duty after a two week vacation saying rumors of his resignation were groundless and circulated during his absence. He urged the public to disregard unverified claims and resume normal contacts with the office.

About 150 attendees including out of town guests gathered at Highway Park Saturday for a Federal employes picnic in Del Rio. Seventy five federal department workers and their families enjoyed the event from 3 to 8 pm with guests from Uvalde El Paso Laredo and Eagle Pass. Supper was served between 6 and 7 pm.
