The Railroad Commission of Texas denied Southland Greyhound Lines Inc. a permit to operate a San Antonio to Ven Horn route via Del Rio. The denial followed a Del Rio hearing where motor transportation officials reviewed Unis agul and other applications. Meanwhile Mexican Bornet Coaches Inc. secured a permit to run Del Rio to Alpine, and Pecos and Rio Grande Bus Line is authorized to operate Alpine to Van Horn. Southland routes already connect Van Horn and El Paso.
Pipe arrives for Villa Acuna water works as Patino arranges delivery. A well near Las Vacas Creek is drilled, a concrete reservoir rises on high ground to provide pressure, and Valeriano Valdez and Company hold the water franchise. Concrete sidewalks replace cobblestones while street paving is postponed to finish distribution first.
Del Rio High School holds baccalaureate exercises Sunday at 11 in the Pirot Baptist Church auditorium. Rev Charles Nixon of First Methodist will give the address with city pastors assisting. Program includes hymns, scripture, offertory, and benediction led by local clergy and music directors.
Pred Zuehl receives a building permit for a 12 by 12 drink stand costing 450 dollars. F. B. Rutledge gets two permits for a 9 by 18 addition costing 540 dollars and a 28 by 28 four room residence costing 1000 dollars. J. Villareal also granted a permit to move a house.
A marriage license was issued Saturday to Victor Arteaga and Maria Arriosola. The couple filed the papers at the county clerk’s office and plan a future ceremony.
Hopkins of Val Verde County and Juan LaCrosse District Attorney will address the Texas County and District Clerks Association in Del Rio June 13. The program lists sessions on fee bills deposit law and delinquent tax records with officers and speakers from Coleman, Fort Worth, Harris, Dallas, and other counties. Continued on Page 2.
Bud McKinney, Del Rio youth and Texas amateur meet sensation, is eliminated in the semifinals by Gaston Peek of Galveston with a 4 and 3 victory. Peck overturned McKinney after taking an early 18-hole lead, with McKinney having previously upset defending champion Denny Shute in the first round.
Martial law was lifted in Sherman at noon today as forces withdraw to home stations. Since May 9 a mob guarded the county seat after burning the Lee Grayson County courthouse and removing the cremated remains of a Black man accused of assaulting a white woman.
More than 100 delinquent tax cases are being processed by Walter Jones city attorney in the district court. The first batch, about 49 suits, was filed Friday as the drive to collect unpaid city taxes continues.
Miss Amy Johnson, 22, becomes the first woman to fly solo from London to Darwin, Australia, finishing the hazardous 9990 mile journey despite storms and multiple accidents along the route. Her bold voyage, begun in May, survived doubts she would reach Darwin.
The Highway No 90 Association will hold its next directors meeting in Van Horn on July 14 following a Saturday session in Del Rio. Hal A Hamilton said the meeting showed strong member enthusiasm and a motor parade to Van Horn is planned with committees formed for nominating and program duties.
Mr Gibbs 59 longtime editor of the Eagle Daily Guide died at home in Eagle Pass after a month of illness. He had been a prominent Texas newspaper man, previously with the Galveston News, and his efforts supported Maverick County irrigation. His daughter Lorene Gibbs worked with the immigration service. his wife had died years earlier.
Alfred Snag Laughlin son of Mr and Mrs J T Laughlin of Del Rio will graduate from Texas University in May He attended Del Rio High School 1924 Sehireiner Institute two years taught school two years and joined the Texas University program for two years He earned a baseball letter and played on the football squad He cannot attend the commencement as he will be with the University baseball team in Del Rio June 7 8 9 His sister Frances Laughlin is a Texas junior planning to return to Del Rio for the summer.
Weather outlook for Del Rio and vicinity calls for warmer conditions tonight and Sunday with a high near 79 and a low around 61. Southwest and Southeast areas may see variations while North Central and interior regions stay fair and warmer. Mrs. W. W. Mitchell and children Ada Pearl Jessie Mae Alice Cela and Miss Curry May English arrived in Del Rio from San Antonio to visit Mrs. Mitchells father. M. D. Malone.

H M Hutchinson won the Felipe High School contract with a bid of 34900 dollars for a ten room plus auditorium building. Carnell Hill was second lowest at 38990 dollars. The school board president Santos Garza and secretary Rodolfo Gutierrez announced the plan to use tile and concrete in the new structure on the Wilson property off Brackettville road.
The Del Rio High School senior class hosted a program of pep on class night in the First Baptist Church auditorium. Senior leaders, music by Katherine Tate, readings by Marvin Donahoe and Luis de la Fuente, and vows and prophecies by Frances Ross and Antoinette Brite highlighted the evening with Wayne Love presiding.
May 24 report: Jesus Gomez died after a stick penetrated his body in an auto accident last Tuesday in Crystal City. Several others are in serious condition at a local hospital.
Postal nominations list James G. Gray for Camp Wood and Myrtle L. Hurley for Robert Lee with reinominations for Rey B. Nichols of Houston. The batch includes about a dozen Texas renominations sent by President Hoover to the Senate.
