Wool prices and demand weaken as co ops report a discouraging market. Dealers note outside buyers’ activity in Boston and falling quotations for mohair and various wool grades. Prices show limited demand for finest lines with Texas and original bag goods fetching lowered rates.
Schreiner Wool and Mohair Company sold 69 900 pounds of long wool at 17 cents a pound to Adams and Leland Reston in Del Rio. Buyers also secured an option on 800 000 pounds of 12 month wool at a firm 17 cent per pound scale. Deals closed Saturday morning.
Brewster County Chamber of Commerce led by Clay Holland plans protest against abandoning Fort Russell at Marfa. A telegram to Governor Ross Sterling requests aid to prevent removal. Fort Russell is the lone army post on the Mexican border between Fort Bliss and Fort Clark, a span over 500 miles. Local officials seek Mexican cooperation to keep troops in the U.S. area.
San Antonio reports Everett Lloyd unveils a new biography Law Roy Bean detailing the outlaw judge known as Law West of the Pecos. The 200 page work, with 20 rare illustrations, surveys Bean life, trials, and legends, with chapters on Langtry and Bean in the 19th century Texas frontier.
Willie Burleson, accused as an accomplice in the Telefus Sharp murder via poisoning, was released on a $5,000 bond. Bessie Sharp, his lover and Telefus Sharp’s widow, wept when he was freed and refused to eat in jail. Burleson returned to work at Big Canyon Ranch, as the couple admitted a five month illicit relationship and a plan to kill Telefus Sharp to marry Bessie.
A Boston wool market crisis emerges as dealers undercut cooperative sellers. E I Mayer of Lone Star Wool and Mohair Co operative warns growers sell for slightly higher prices to buyers at the expense of co ops, fueling a downward spiral in advance payments and wool values. Continued on Page 4.
San Francisco dispatch says June Taylor, sought for the murders of Charlies Crawford and Herbert Spencer in Los Angeles, was moved here after reports she visited a San Quentin cell with an associate of Albert Marco. Crawford, a rich real estate operator and politician, and Spencer, a crusading publisher, were shot in Crawford’s office. David H. Clark, ex assistant district attorney and municipal judge candidate, is held on two murder charges. Spencer was preparing an expose on Los Angeles gambling and racketeering.
Governor Ross Sterling indicated a special session could be convened within 30 days after the Legislature adjourned. The May 23 report from Austin notes lawmakers were ready to end the session that began January 13 and Sterling left early, signaling possible renewed action.
Oklahoma City May 23 The News Herald Publishing Company sues Del Rio Building and Loan Association for 148 50 alleging unpaid advertising space and job shop work from August 1930. The suit lists officers Ben F Foster Julian LaCrosse Dr RM Scott FP Cantu and a board of directors.
President Hoover hosts discussions at Rapidan Camp with Edsel Ford and Postmaster General Brown. Brown plans to propose a six month increase of half a cent in first class postage as the postal service faces a 140 million dollar deficit.
The Evening News argues Val Verde County boards of equalization should set a fair tax rate for both large and small taxpayers. It notes Del Rio’s new corporate renditions seem adequate, hopes for general acceptance, and warns high taxes will deter investment and slow business in these low spirits times.
TYLER Texas May 23 Up- The hijackers last night forced W. M. Sampson owner of a tourist camp to walk barefooted and undressed a quarter of a mile after robbing him of 125 dollars. He said he was warned he would be killed if he reported the crime and feared reporting until today. The bandits gained admission under pretence of renting a cottage.
Funeral services were planned for Saturday in Ozona for W H Augustine a 59 year old Crockett County ranchman who died in a San Angelo hospital. He lived in Crockett County since 1898 served as sheriff and tax collector from 1920 to 1928 and previously ranched in Coleman County. He is survived by his widow three sons and three daughters.
Crawford Trees a LaPryor farmer was found guilty of criminally assaulting his 12 year old daughter and was sentenced to life in prison. Texas Ranger Alfred Allee reported Trees confessed to starting the assaults when the girl was eight. The sentence was handed down at Crystal City after the Del Rio case details emerged.
Galveston May 23 The Texas State Elks' Association held its 1932 convention with Laredo winning the event. Dr. Harry Logsdon of Ranger was elected president for the coming year. District vice-presidents and trustees were chosen from Dallas Temple Port Arthur Fort Worth San Antonio El Paso and Brenham. A Gulf trip aboard the Coast Guard vessel Saranac and Friday ball and concerts accompanied the session.
Inquiry to determine the personal details related to the case is underway in Oklahoma City. No further information was released and officials did not identify the individuals involved.
Val Verde County Commissioners Court will meet as a board of equalization to review reports by County Tax Assessor Clarence Herreford. Former Judge Roger Gillis notes the county posted balances of about 40 000 in 1930 and over 80 000 in 1931 and urges tax rate reductions from 80 to potentially lower levels.
Palestine Texas May 98 QIP Officers instructed by the grand jury to clean up gambling dens and dry up speakeasies at Frankston. They returned 46 indictments and directed renewed enforcement efforts across the East Texas towns named in the session notes.
