Early today a fire endangered a large part of San Felipe as two garage sheds ignited in a dense residential area. Del Rio firefighters led by Chief E. V. Easterling fought the blaze for about two hours, overcoming water access problems before a 2,000 foot hose finally secured a supply. Estimated loss reached 145 dollars, with the property owned by I Cantu.
Mother Superior Kenneth and Principal announce bids opened in San Antonio for a two story fireproof Sacred Heart Academy building to house an enlarged Del Rio Catholic High School. The project, costing at least 30000 dollars, includes eight classrooms a large library and expanded courses in science music shorthand bookkeeping and typing.
Shanghai May 21 Reuters reports rebel Ewings troops withdrew after a Canton capture, Nationalists re entering the city. The text also mentions a Dallas wedding with P Young and Mrs Mabel Rose Swindle as witnesses and a Del Rio to Austin trip for a season.
Brady May 21 The Farmers and Merchants State Bank robbery may go to trial this week in District Court. Five suspects including R C Turner Lucille Awalt Billie Ballard Irene Curtis and Coy Nigh face charges for taking 2000 during the noon robbery while Harold Johnson and a bookkeeper were away at lunch. Night a juvenile was already sentenced in county court to an indeterminate state reformatory term.
Miss Margie Neal of Carthage was elected president pro tem of the Texas Senate, the first time a woman has held the post. Should both governor and lieutenant governor leave the state, she would become acting governor.
The Del Rio Lions travel to Cowboy Park Friday afternoon to face the Brackettville Lions in a key late-season baseball clash. Led by Dr York and M R Keller the home team plans heavy slugging and flexible pitcher selection as they chase pennant hopes with proceeds supporting the high school basketball court.
Southern Pacific workers from the Del Rio area win the Loving Cup for track and field at the Southern Pacific Association meet in Houston last Sunday and Monday. The 34.5 inch trophy, engraved with past winners, will be presented at the El Paso division office and later engraved for El Paso champions.
Paris reports the allied delegates to the reparations conference accept part of Germanys reservations and reject others. They are drafting a reply to Germany to compel acceptance or rejection. Washington notes the president expects no general railroad rate rise from the Supreme Court O Fallon decision.
Funeral services for A. T. Sterling, 83, a Del Rio resident and former Killeen merchant, were held in Killeen. Del Rio Rotary Club plans to send a delegate to Rotary International in Dallas next week with PF. H. Doran and other members signifying attendance. A discussion on the on-to-Dallas movement was set for the Wednesday noon meeting.
Ranger R. Y Secrest turns 78 today May 21 and is said to be the oldest ranger in service. He has lived in Del Rio two years and is fondly remembered by many friends. Previously a Williamson county resident, he is a long time settler who recalls Civil War days and remains in good health and spirits.
Texas adopted the song Texas Qur Texas as the official state song after the House vote last night. The Senate also approved the choice last week. Representative McCombs of Dallas criticized the lyric and music as the sorriest song ever written.
Sacred Heart Academy seniors kept busy with events before graduation. The class and other pupils picnicked at Devil's River hosted by the Sisters, returning at 8 30 p m. The next night they attended a Princess theater party hosted by graduate Mary Helen Freeman.
Investigation into the mysterious killing of Walter S Huntington, a Harvard junior found slain near his Windsor home, uncovers parties linked to the wife of a wealthy man unnamed by authorities. Two motives cited include blackmail and a thrill slaying. Clarke Huntington, brother of the victim, is pictured.

Plans are underway for the Southwest Texas Baptist Educational Conference to meet in Corpus Christi at 2 o clock Thursday afternoon May 30. Matters of concern to Baptists statewide will be discussed and a large attendance is expected.
Local showers expected tonight and Wednesday in West Texas with warmer conditions except in the southwest area. East Texas sees cloudy skies with possible showers on the west portion tonight and Wednesday, and warmer temperatures in the west and Lower Rio Grande Valley tonight, continuing into Wednesday.
New Orleans groups ask the Interstate Commerce Commission to reopen and grant a rehearing on the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe’s bid to gain control of the Kansas City Mexico and Orient railroad. They argue KC and Orient sales favored Texas ports over New Orleans Houston and Galveston. The petition ties the Orient sale to Santa Fe’s broader strategy, noting previous ICC guidance.
The local American Legion posts announce flowers for Memorial Day observance on May 30. May 21 Stamford police and several West Texas towns search for Dave McCauley a Stamford youth charged with fatally shooting his high school friend Paul Glenn in the Stamford Sanitarium basement where McCauley worked. The family believes the shooting was accidental.

Clyde Sellers Jr. of Del Rio is receiving Pasteur Institute rabies serum in Austin after a dog on the ranch bit him May 4. The dog, owned by a Mexican on the ranch, showed rabies signs. head sent to Austin for testing. Clyde has undergone several serums, with 11 more planned, while parents keep in touch by letters and long distance calls.
