L. E. Trimble former special ranger will plead self defense at trial in Lano for the killing of W. R. Tomlinson near Menard on November 27. Harold B. Opp rancher is also charged with murder in the death of Menard County commissioner. Trimble's case moved from Menard to District Court. Opp’s trial will be in Burnet County next month.
Funeral services were held for G W Stephenson long time Sutton County ranchman and former deputy sheriff and commissioner. He died shortly after midnight at his daughter Rose Thorp's home in Sonora after months of ill health. Survivors include three children Guenard and Wirt Stephenson and Rose Thorp.
The Producers Wool and Mohair Co held a sale in Texas delivering 500000 to 600000 pounds of mohair. William Cheshire of Collins and Aikman paid 27 cents for grown hair and 37 cents for kid hair. C B Dutch Wardlaw president announced. The sale leaves 1000000 pounds of mohair in the state held by three Southwest Texas warehouses.
County Tax Collector J. W. Hall announced an obscure Texas Statute requires a 25 dollar occupational tax or a 10 to 200 dollar fine for anyone circulating chain letters. Each sale by an unpaid seller is a separate offense, with enforcement to arrest nonpayers.
Four San Felipe celebrants of the weekend were fined 14 each Monday on charges of disturbing the peace after disturbances at a dance Sunday night. The fines reflect a likely lower cost than a jury trial would incur. One youth faced a disturbing the peace charge following a dispute with his girlfriend over mescal.
Four men labored in Moore Park Monday to remove drift carried by San Felipe Creek during Friday and Saturday floods. The creek rose about four feet but caused no damage to trees or shrubs. crews gained ground on the peninsula above Pig Pen Crossing as silt was deposited.
Eight year old Shorney Evans, missing since Friday, was found buried under earth in a cave she and playmates dug at an excavation near home. District Attorney Sullivan said the girl probably died in a landslide. Police believe her death was accidental after examining the body.
Babson Poll from Babson Park Massachusetts reports President Roosevelt maintains broad popularity among voters while confidence in the New Deal declines slightly. The survey predicts a likely 1936 Electoral College win but notes several Midwestern and Northeast states could swing Republican.
Paris reports France reinforcing sea frontiers and moving naval power toward the North Sea from the Mediterranean. Troops shift from the Italian frontier to German border fortifications after Rome accord with Italy. The French navy second squadron doubles its coastal protection, with twenty five submarines added plus a cruiser and two destroyer divisions.
The County Commissioners Court sat Monday as the county board of equalization considering renditions of county property. O D Finegan, assistant to Tax Collector Lyle Almond, joined the board. The group expected to stay in session throughout the day.
Five members of the Liberal bloc walked out of the Senate chamber as Dennis Chavez of New Mexico was administered the oath as successor to the late Bronson Cutting. The walkout followed criticism of the administration over Cutting’s re election stance and his party switch to support Roosevelt.
May 20 report from Dallas says flood waters caused a 3 million dollar weekend rampage with 17 deaths and four missing across Texas and Oklahoma. Oklahoma City ordered 300 families from lowland homes to flee a 16 foot Canadian River wall as city officials warned of rising waters and moved residents to a tent community.
Two escapees from Darrington Farm abducted George Saunders of Huntsville and drove away in his car toward Crockett before the trail went cold. Authorities say the convicts escaped last night and Sabders was stopped by the fugitives near Huntsville. The House committee then presented to President Roosevelt an inflation bonus bill but he signaled no reversal of his veto stance. Leaders plan a joint session to hear the veto message at 12 30 Wednesday.
