Washington May 19 Colleagues urged Senator Joe Robinson of Arkansas as successor to retiring Justice Willis Van Devanter. Nevada Senator Pittman praised Robinson's integrity courage and legal achievements from three decades in Congress. Roosevelt offered no clear indication of a preferred candidate while many speculated about various names sought for the role.
Mrs Claudia Mae Travelstead 47 wife of J Travelstead editor of the Del Rio Evening News died Monday night at 410 East Greenwood Street. Funeral was held at First Baptist Church with interment in Masonic Cemetery. Survivors include son Lee Cavitt 15 and her mother Mrs W E Cook of Del Rio. Friends from out of town included Pat Murphy and Dean Chenoweth. The city case against City Commissioners Averill and Koog was advanced to June 23 in the Fourth Court of Civil Appeals.
Several thousand unionists refused to work at Studebaker Corp in South Bend Indiana as most departments were cited for stoppage. Po state Federation of Labor delegates authorized a special committee to pledge moral support in California. Ronald Lindsay British ambassador said in New York that Britain would favor American farmers if tariffs on British goods were reduced. Washington reports note hints of compromise by administration supporters but opponents of Roosevelt’s court bill pressed for a Senate floor triumph after yesterday’s judiciary committee adverse vote.
The National Safety Council seeks scientific study to reduce the 1936 U S daily traffic death toll. A five point program targets intoxication, excessive speed, pedestrians, accident prone drivers, and night driving with committees of physicians police officials engineers and educators to coordinate research and a public safety campaign. The plan includes license laws driver impairment tests night restrictions better illumination and pedestrian protection. The nation recorded 36 573 motor vehicle deaths in 1936.
R. R. Lancaster pasturage specialist of the A. and M. Extension Service visited Del Rio on Wednesday. He toured several pastures in the county accompanied by County Agent J. B. Kidd and examined forage conditions in the area.

M K Thornton Jr extension chemist led soil tests in Del Rio on Monday identifying strongly alkaline conditions, high calcium and phosphorus, low potash and nitrogen, and low organic matter. He advised green manure plowing and applying 40 pounds of ammonium sulfate and 25 pounds of kainit per acre, with copperas or ferrous sulfate optional. For orchards, he suggested copperas and sulfate of ammonia at 25 pounds per acre or three quarters of a pound per tree.
