Partly cloudy tonight and Wednesday in Del Rio and vicinity. A warmer Wednesday with a high near 91 after a yesterday high of 91 and a low around 68. This morning low was 60 as temperatures edge upward.
Dr. F. E. Townsend told the House investigating committee that the Townsend pension movement was not started to obtain money or spread hate. He said followers feel aligned with old parties yet expect a third party to form when opportunity arises. Representative Hoffman accused Townsend of sailing under false colors.
Measles topped the Texas communicable disease list with 325 cases in the week ending May 16, per the State Health Department report to Dr. Geo W. Cox. Mumps 286, influenza 218, chicken pox 98, pneumonia 68, tuberculosis 63, scarlet fever 46, whooping cough 44, diphtheria 37, and dysentery 21 were also reported with year totals and prior-week comparisons included.
Governor Allred told Texas bankers at the convention the state is financially sound. He predicted a cash balance over 3 million dollars in chief operating funds by year end and that the balance would remain after a $1 per capita increase in scholastic funds. Allred arrived from Washington.
Mexican national railways 48 000 workers ended a two day strike after President Cardenas declared it unjustified and nonexistent. The war department ordered military zones to enforce the decision while conciliation boards warned loss of contract rights if workers did not return within 24 hours.
The Texas Highway Department places a granite marker east of Del Rio on Highway No 3 with two bronze tablets to be mounted soon. The upper tablet records Val Verde County’s formation in 1885 from Crockett Kinney and Pecos, its name from the Battle of Val Verde, and Del Rio as county seat. The lower tablet bears a Texas lone star and the inscription Texas State Highway Department 1936.
Three Del Rio Knights of Columbus delegates Albert Johnson Leo Farrell and Claude Miller left Monday for Galveston to attend the state convention opening Tuesday. The convention runs through Wednesday.
Lieut Harold P Richards pay master of the U S S Ranger drowned when an amphibian plane crashed into the Panama Canal north of Gamboa. Pilot Thomas M Neal and Store keeper Henry Melville were rescued. Melville carried $20 000 in cash recovered and delivered to the flagship Pennsylvania. Richards body from San Diego Cal was recovered and placed aboard a hospital ship. The plane was recovered by crane.
Panhandle Plains farmers meeting in Amarillo urge Washington to raise federal seed loans from 200 to 500 dollars due to many wheat growers unable to plant under current allotments. They sent resolutions to Representative Marvin Jones, head of the House agriculture committee.
Rey Gillett of Chateaugay New York recalls using the family cook stove bought by his grandmother 62 years ago. He reports it has been used daily and still provides good service.
Judge Brian Montague announces he seeks renomination for the 63rd Judicial District in the Democratic primary on July 25, 1936. He cites a three and a half year record and pledges continued service, noting his past roles in Alpine and Del Rio and UT Austin training.
Mayor Thos M Johnson issues a proclamation designating May 23 as Poppy Day in Del Rio. Citizens are urged to wear memorial poppies to honor World War I dead and support the American Legion Auxiliary poppy distribution.
Funeral services for Miss Alice Ehrhardt 27 sister of F. M. Ehrhardt of this city were held from her parents home in San Antonio. Interment followed at St John Lutheran Cemetery. She died after several weeks illness. In attendance were Mr and Mrs F M Ehrhardt and daughter Patsy Carrol Mrs Molly Ayers. Survivors include her parents brothers Henry Charles Walter and sister Mrs W A Ledford.
The British government notes that lesser naval powers have begun constructing over 200 submarines since 1930. The disclosure, made in a note to Washington and Tokyo on May 6, cites the London Naval Treaty escape clause allowing increases under certain conditions.
Italian press reports 498 political exiles return to their homes on the Tallan islands in advance of an expected unprecedented amnesty declaration on May 24.

Rainfall measured at 22 inches locally with heavier showers along San Felipe Creek. ranches near Devil's River reported up to two inches. Some areas like Langtry and Dryden had no rain.
Del Rio Fire Chief Frank Schmidt led his department on his first run Monday afternoon. A fire of undetermined origin damaged the Petersen home garage on East First Street.

Washington Democrat Representative Marion A Zioncheck celebrated a fishing haul with Virgin Islands rum and hair tonic. On a honeymoon he mixed the drink, summoned a taxidermist, and offered samples to colleagues and constituents amid his joyous announcement.
Moscow reports the trial of Wrangel Island ruler Semenchuk and aide Startsev on charges of murder and starvation of Eskimos during the 1934 35 polar expedition. Prosecutor General Vyschinsky alleges a detainment camp and dictatorial rule led to deaths and the murder of Dr. W. F. Pulfson.
Paris May 19 former premier Herriot declared the way is open to settlement of the France United States war debt misunderstanding through a new trade treaty. He said the settlement aimed to gain the United States aid in the troubled German situation.
