Mrs. J. Travelstead dies Monday night after a life described as cheerful and pleasant. The Senate group voted against the court bill in a related report as tributes note her passing.

Mrs Claudia Mae Travelstead 47, wife of editor J Travelstead of The Del Rio Evening News, died Monday night at 10 25 after a brief illness at her home 410 East Chernwood Street. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 5 p.m. in the First Baptist Church with Rev Roland Murray Rev L C Beasley and other clergy officiating. Interment will follow in Masonic Cemetery. She had lived in Del Rio 13 years, born in Cassville Missouri March 4 1899, and came to Texas 26 years ago. She was active in church and civic groups and is survived by her husband, son Lee Cavitt 15, her mother Mrs W E Cook and two sisters. Bearers include H H Bilbo WC Hodge M S Martin Walter F Jones Phil B Foster and P A Bennett.
The First Christian Church installed Rev Burton Johnson as minister during a Monday evening service. The event featured readings, music, and a sermon by Rev Johnson. Johnson previously served in Houston before arriving in Del Rio on May 1.

The Supreme Court yesterday failed to rule on the constitutionality of the Federal Social Security Act. It adjourned until next week and said decisions will be delivered by Monday or Tuesday. The court upheld provisions of the 1936 revenue act barring refunds of $963 million in taxes unless taxpayers bore the cost. The Social Security Act faces three cases including old age pension and unemployment insurance. George P Davis of Waltham, Mass challenged the old age tax with Edison Electric Illuminating as a stockholder. About 26,610,000 workers and 2,700,000 employers are assessed to total $3 billion by 1942 as benefits begin.

Dr J A McDonald visits Houston for the annual State Dental Association meeting. The Texas Society of Oral Surgeons and Exodontists join in sessions with other dentists. Dr A L Frew of Dallas elected president, succeeding Dr L F Robichaux of San Antonio. Dr W B McCall of Temple named vice president, Dr O E Ranfranz of Houston re-elected secretary treasurer. McDonald aims to return to Del Rio by Friday.
Associate Justice William H. Van Devanter informed President Roosevelt he will retire from active service on June 2 after 26 years on the court. The move follows a new retirement law allowing 70 plus justices full pay, and opens Roosevelt’s first Supreme Court appointment.
Mr and Mrs Clear Randall formerly of Del Rio and now in Chicago visit the area as guests of Mr and Mrs W F Easterling. Randall, raised here, is credit manager of the Anaconda Wire and Cable Company in Chicago. Mrs T C Worthington of San Antonio also visits with the Easterlings as a guest.
In Monts France on June 3, Wallis Warfield and the Duke of Windsor will marry at the Chateau de Candé with no royal family present. The date marks King George V's birthday, and the couple will be short of 43 and 41 respectively after the ceremony.
Federal District Court in San Antonio recessed and district offices closed in respect to D H Hart 70 United States clerk for the Western District of Texas who died in Austin Hart served as district clerk beginning in 1887 and covered early circuit duties in Del Rio and surrounding districts Judges Ro J McMillan DuVal West and Charles Boynt El Paso attended the funeral along with District Attorney W R Smith Jr Marshal Guy McNamara and other office members.
Four autos from Texas cities collided at Chalk Hill on the Fort Worth Pike. Eleven people escaped injuries. Participants included W W Wheeler of Fort Worth and T D Green of Sherman. Green’s car struck Mrs. F L Banowski of Galveston, while Moore of Dallas rammed Green after Green bounced off Banowski.
News brief reports the House judiciary committee favored a bill creating one more federal judge for the southern district of Texas. Also noted is a Rio Grande expedition coming from Santa Helena Canyon and a tragedy in New York where Helen Tiernan accuses her suitor George Christodules of instigating an attack that killed her daughter and wounded her son.
A Democratic bloc lenses opposition as the Senate Judiciary Committee signals a fight over a bill to allow the President to appoint six new members to the Supreme Court. Amid party divisions, 38 oppose, 30 support, and 28 undecided as May 18 events unfold in Washington.
The House voted unanimously for submission of a constitutional amendment to return county official remuneration to a fee system. The measure directs a statewide vote in August on whether to shelve the salary system and adopt fees.
Examinations for the senior class started Tuesday at 8 a.m. at Del Rio High School and run through Thursday noon. Superintendent Ro M Bankhead said seniors must report Friday at 3:30 p.m. for report cards and return books by 4 p.m. the same day.
No change reported Tuesday in Tim Cobb's condition as he remains seriously ill at his home 208 West Strickland Street.
Del Rio area forecast shows one day ahead conditions with a high in the 90s and a low around 68 degrees. Overnight temperatures were similar to morning readings near 68 degrees with little rain expected.
