Delinquent city taxes may qualify for a 90 day moratorium with penalty and interest waived if payment is made by Sunday. Checks postmarked May 22 count as first payment. About $72,000 is delinquent, including $38,000 from prior years, and the city cites savings for large taxpayers using the three payment plan.
Shamrock Texas May 18 The Progress of Transportation parade will entertain the U S 66 Highway Association convention on May 23 led by Lillie Pawnee Bill a famed Oklahoma figure. Also planned is a 20 Year Highway Club with Bentley McLean and Cornell Sayre organizing efforts.
Ban Angelo report on T. A. Burns of Burkett who will be 100 July 12 and aims to live to 130 or 140. He credits longevity to good conduct, avoids meat and coffee, retires early, and rarely uses medicine. Burns has served in governmental duties for 76 years and attended as a guest of the National League of District Postmasters.
Mrs. Charles Poulin of Lewiston Maine is reported as the mother of four sets of twins, a remarkable household that drew attention in local circles.
Labor spokesman Edward F. McCrady warns the Senate Manufactures Committee that unless the federal government acts to ease unemployment distress the doors to revolution will be thrown wide open. The hearing in Washington includes members Senators Costigan LaFollette and Cutting and witnesses from the Children's Bureau Jewish Social Research Community Council and Child Welfare groups.
State highway officials postpone award of May 26 27 contracts after Federal Bureau of Public Roads fails to approve plans. Estimated project cost 904000 with federal cost share required. Withdrawals reduce total May awards from 3325000 to 2241000 affecting Pecos Tunis Creek Crockett Terrell Kerr and Crockett drainage and grading works along Highways 27 3 and 41.
The new 150000 dollar reinforced concrete bridge across the Red River linking Texas Highway 23 with Oklahoma Highway 24 will open May 26. Officials from Wilbarger and Jackson counties plus Sayre Mangum representatives met at Altus to fix the date. Governors Sterling and Murray and highway commissions will attend the ceremony. A Vernon Sayre Mangum Altus Chamber of Commerce committee will handle arrangements. The 3705 foot structure links Winnipeg Canada to Brownsville Texas as part of the Canada to Gulf Highway.
Heavy rain hail and wind swept Southwest Texas Monday and Tuesday damaging crops in Cuero Crockett County and D H anis. Hail up to two inches fell in Flatonia causing roof and vehicle damage. Crop losses reported in Ozona Moulton Devine Taylor Cotulla Bastrop Lockhart Karnes City Beeville Jourdanton Lampasas Falfurrias Rockport Gonzales and Weimar.
From Vatican City Pope Pius XI calls a worldwide eight day period of prayer and penance beginning June 3 to combat terrorism anarchy and other evils. The encyclical Cari tas Christi blames greed wealth concentration exaggerated nationalism and communism for the unrest.
Rotarians met for a regular luncheon to hear a program titled Boys Work in Rotary. The event opened with a vocal duet by Mrs. Goldie Kirk Holman and Mrs. Xena Hill Shaw. Rev. H. Conger Jones delivered the address on Rotary duties to boys on both sides of privilege. Program was prepared and sponsored by F. H. Doran.
Quanah Texas farmers report only about 10 percent of Hardeman County cotton planted. Cool nights and cold soil delay planting on sandy land where work usually begins mid month. Most growers expect to finish planting within the next two weeks.

R. H. Rogers was elected president and D. H. Hodge vice president of the A. and M. Club at the Chamber of Commerce office Tuesday evening. W. O. Fritze was chosen secretary treasurer. Meetings will be held the third Tuesday of each month as the club outlines its work for the year addressing regional problems.
The Court of Criminal Appeals today affirmed the death sentence for John L. Green in the Medina County murder during a robbery of Frank Kempf. Ernest Johnson also received a death sentence in the same case, while W. A. Schafer was affirmed for a 99-year term in a related matter after a prior reversal.
Sutton County commissioners report the county portion of Highway 27 west of Sonora is complete and the right of way is prepared for state letting. District highway engineer F Mounsund said bids may be sought at the May 26 27 session for grading and small drainage on the seven mile stretch. The state previously said funds are ready to proceed once right of way is secured. After the first seven miles, an equivalent segment remains to reach the west city limit.

Mission Texas May 18 The last privately owned irrigation system of any size in the Valley has passed into the hands of farmers in the district they plan to improve it Hidalgo County Water Control and Improvement District No 14 approved the transfer The district now encompasses more than 22000 acres of Valley land The other half of the Shary irrigation system was taken over earlier by the farmers.
D. E. McDougald Worshipful Master of the local Masonic chapter attended the dedication of the George Washington National Masonic Memorial in Washington DC. Delegates from every state and from Cuba Hawaii the Philippines and Alaska were present. Texas sent chartered cars with McDougald as the sole western Texas representative Del Rio the westernmost Texas city represented.
Patrolmen John J. Buckley and George F. Brasil of Boston reported the theft of their police badges from their overcoats while they sat in a lunchroom.
Del Rio High School will award diplomas to over 60 seniors at the May 27 commencement. Judge W F Boggess will deliver the address to a class that includes his son W F Boggess Jr. Rev James F Black to give the Baccalaureate sermon. Examinations for seniors run Wednesday to Friday, with others starting next Tuesday.
