Soviet parachute expert Pavloff-Silvansky was shot by an 18-year-old civilian sentry at a suburban airfield after an argument about an open hangar door. An officer accompanying him was wounded in the incident.

HOLLYWOOD May 17. Film crafts leaders rejected a second formal truce proposal from producers after a mass meeting. They plan to widen picket lines at studio gates and refuse union recognition and closed shop demands. The strike committee said producers gave no guarantee workers would return to prestrike status.
Last rites for Mrs Sarah Wood Hutto 77 widow of W G Hutto were held at 3 pm Sunday in the Carta Valley Baptist Church with Rev L B Gilbert officiating. Interment followed at Carta Valley cemetery. She died Friday night at home after weeks of illness. She resided in Del Rio for 10 years, born October 1 1859 in Abbeyville Alabama. Surviving: three sons Joe Chris and Carl of Carta Valley Bruni of Comstock. three daughters Mrs Jess Baker Del Rio Mrs S Wright Pumpville and Mrs C C Hutto Carlsbad New Mexico. 29 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Funeral services for James Isom Roberts age 60 a Del Rio Negro were held Sunday afternoon at 5 30 from the colored Methodist Church. Interment followed in the Negro cemetery under the direction of the Doran Funeral Home. Roberts had long been a railroad employee and since 1925 worked at Mrs Crosby's Cafe in Villa Acuna. He died Thursday.
Returning from a blaze two Kingston firemen were killed and a third badly injured when their truck was struck by a train at a grade crossing. The accident occurred yesterday near Kingston New York.

Oscar Cardenas 20, a San Felipe High School graduate and four year student at Sul Ross State Teachers College Alpine, died Saturday at 4 pm in Ballinger. He had taught there since February and planned to return to Sul Ross this summer. Services Monday at 6:30 pm at San Felipe Methodist Church. burial in San Felipe Masonic Cemetery. San Felipe schools closed in his honor. He is survived by four brothers Melchor of Mexico City Jesus Felix Rodolfo Cardenas and four sisters all of Del Rio.
The American Legion announces memorial services on May 30 at 5 parlock in Westlawn Cemetery. Committee chair A S Hudson leads with Jim Centili R H Ward and J D Howell assisting. Activities include prayer a short address taps a firing squad and band selections in the cemetery.
H Hart clerk of the Federal District Court for the Western District of Texas died Sunday in Austin. He had served many years as court clerk and was in Del Rio for the October term in 1936. Funeral services will be held in Austin Tuesday.

The Rev. Burton Johnson will be installed as pastor of First Christian Church tonight at 7:45 PM in a public service. Ministers from city churches will participate and music will be directed by Mrs Wo D Curry with pianist Mrs T D Moore. Johnson will give a brief address and sing a solo. He comes from Houston where he led a church for several years and is a Berea College graduate.
Reported over the weekend nineteen deaths in Texas from violence and accidents. Thirteen fatalities were from traffic crashes, three from drowning, one from self-inflicted gunshot, one from cuts by an axe, and one from electrocution.
Hugh T Wood deputy collector of customs in Del Rio returned Sunday from a three day convention of deputy collectors of customs in San Antonio where attendees from this district were present. He stated Monday.
