May 17 Graf Zeppelin with three engines out drifts under strong wind and drops a note at Grignan France stating plans to land at Toulon airdome. The monster airship appears to drift, with Eckener ordering troops on standby at Lyons and preparations for possible eastern routes over the Alps.
In Philadelphia on May 17 Capone and his bodyguard Frank Cline pleaded guilty to carrying concealed deadly weapons. Capone was sentenced to one year in the county prison, with the judge noting the quick arrest and indictment occurred within 13 minutes of their capture.
Chicago on May 17 observed that Al Capone, long elusive to authorities, is actually imprisoned. The city awaits details as the notorious gangster faces confinement after years of pursuit.
Bob Martin arrives from an Indio ranch in Maverick County to water Del Rio flowers not expecting rain. He predicts Eagle Pass will push its irrigation proposition despite opposition in the lower valley and notes Del Rio’s favorable stance is appreciated by Eagle Pass residents.
Fine rains drenched a wide area west of Del Rio last night with about two inches near Charley Markwood and Bob Miers ranches along the Sonora road. Devil's River ran and Castle Canyon reported a swollen flow while Blaine's Lake received at least three inches. Shumla drew strong runoff. Val Verde counties soaked through a week of rain, lifting stockmen's spirits as range condition improves.

Austin May 17. The push to cut automobile license fees and enact a four cent gasoline tax died for the present session. Representative Leonard Tillotson laid the measure on the table and will not recall it. He said senators want more time to study the proposal, and Governor Moscely may push both topics at the next called session.
John Y. Long, mayor of the city, buys a motor boat as a gift to his son Stiliman who recently graduated from Del Rio High School. Informants joke about Long’s future title from mayor to captain or admiral, noting his limited naval experience yet fondness for navy beans.
Two boys held by Sheriff Whistler yesterday on suspicion of possessing a stolen car will be turned over to Nacogdoches officials today or tomorrow. The vehicle was taken from a party in that city after an officer was alerted during a prank directed at a Mexican gasoline station attendant in Del Rio.
A report from the Mc Bee McDaniels well eighty miles west of Del Rio says gas was struck yesterday. Drilled by a Los Angeles company on the Sam Bel ranch in Terrell County near the Val Verde county line, the well shows a fair amount of oil and a plentiful gas supply.
Del Rio Delivers a lively baseball clash as Brackettville Lions visit Del Rio Lions for a 3 to 5 scoring tilt in Brackettville territory. Key players include Walter Hodge and Jim Netts for Del Rio, with George Rose and Rod Foster starring for Brackettville amid injuries and crowd praise.
Hal Hamilton sold 25 aged steers at 85 dollars, 10 cows at 60 dollars, and 196 yearling cattle at 50 dollars to Jim White. He also moved 62 calves from 1928 at 45 dollars to J. R. Hamilton. Frank Barksdale shipped several carloads to market, sourcing cattle from his Mexico ranch.

Fayettville Arkansas May 17 Charles Bassett Texas A&M coach today accepted the position of head basketball assistant varsity coach at the University of Arkansas in a career move.
Warsaw dispatches report a night fire in Iwie Poland that killed about 100 people and left 500 women homeless after destroying 250 houses. Authorities suspect arson as the blaze burned for hours and was visible from miles away.
Miss Gladys Smith of San Antonio and J. W. Burdwell of Pumpville wed at the Episcopal rectory in Del Rio Tuesday evening May 14 at 5 30 oclock. Rev F H Stallknecht officiated and the couple plan to live on the Pumpville ranch.
Washington May 17 Dwight Davis, former secretary of war, today accepted the governorship general of the Philippines.
Ranger reports indicate the so called wild Inman has eluded sightings this week after wandering near here and near Statl wearing birthday clothes. The strange figure, once a local scare, remains unseen as of late.
New York May 17 An expedition to study a gorilla in its native African habitat was announced by Columbia University President Micholas Murray Butler. Financed by Columbia with the American Museum of Natural History and the College of Physicians and Surgeons. The team leaves May 29 and returns early next year. Leader Henry C. Raven and members Drs William Gregory, Jo WoMcGregor and E. T. Engle will record with motion pictures and photos. The aim is to obtain complete adult specimens for anatomical and anthropological study.
Government and district engineers with National Guardsmen and volunteers battled today against a severe flood menace in Memphis as the Mississippi neared the levee tops. In Arkansas the river overflowed levees above Little Rock, with the Plumerville area flooding thousands of acres of cotton land.
About 700 visitors from the 17th Texas district are expected in Angelo for the opening of a two day American Legion and Auxiliary district convention. Officers from the 16th 17th and 18th districts will attend and plans for the coming year will be discussed. Several bands from the district will participate including the Gold Gray Mare band of Brownwood which will appear at public gatherings.
Mineral Wells May 17 A. H. Reihardt of Charlotte North Carolina and his traveling companion Lewis H McCall civil engineer are en route to California following a wager sparked by a remark about walking to the Shriners convention in California. The pair are said to be somewhere west of Mineral Wells aboard a loot bound journey.
Shamrock resident Jess Atchison faces disbelief as officials confirm he registered at a hotel in Amarillo and spent the night in Borger after a fire. Radio and press reports had him presumed burned in the Tourist hotel blaze, until his survival contradicted the identifications.
Del Rio learns of a new Central Power and Light project with a steam plant of 20 000 horsepower to be built by L FE Myers Company near the Southern Pacific bridge on Devil's River. Work expected to start soon with about 300 local workers and full operation within seven months. The plant will feed high power lines to West Texas and Winter Garden areas, boosting regional prosperity and city lighting plans remain under discussion.
May 17 Austin reports the conference bill to eradicate cattle ticks was adopted by both houses but becomes effective August 28 due to a two thirds senate vote shortfall. The measure covers the entire state, begins with edge counties, and plans a statewide eradication wave funded by the State with local counties supplying dipping vats and inspectors.
Peris, Lexas, May 17. The business section of North Terenas, a small hamlet near the place, was destroyed by fire today. No injuries reported and cause under investigation. Local fire crews battled the blaze for hours, with extensive property loss across several shops.
The weather forecast indicates a north portion tonight and Saturday with cloudy conditions and cooler air. Showers are possible Friday night into Saturday, with the east region expecting lingering showers and cooler temperatures.
