In Gordonville Virginia a six and a half hour gun battle ended with the death of William B. Young Orange County sheriff and William Wells and his wife Cora two Negroes. Five officers and one citizen were wounded as a state officer set a shirt on fire and set an out-building ablaze during the confrontation following Wells accused of threatening a white woman with a gun.
Visitors will see a museum in the making at the UT Centennial Exposition with Frank Bell and assistants unwrapping and assembling dinosaur bones for permanent display. The collection includes 4416 pounds of bones from Medicine Bow Wyoming and a 732 pound smoky quartz crystal from Llano County, with a workshop to be set up onsite.
Kenneth Ray Hewgley aged one died Friday at 6:15 p.m. after a two month illness at Williams Sanitarium. A funeral will be held Saturday at 4 p.m. at Doran Funeral Home officiated by Mary Rachford. Burial in Westlawn Cemetery. Born September 25, 1934 in Del Rio. Survived by parents Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Hewgley and brothers Dale and Clyde Jr.
Nine men were administered the oath of office as probationary members of the Border Patrol Saturday morning. The oath was given by Jas. C. Netts, acting as notary public. Names sworn in: Allen J. B. McKinney, Frank E. Norfleet, George L. Nyfeler, Harlon B. Carter, Howard L. Reid, Hervey L. Hart, Howell Aubrey Burnett, William A. Goree, and William G. Titt.
Attorney General McCraw ruled that the Board of Education may supplement the per capita foundation of 17.50 with surplus funds. The State Teachers Association sought a 2.50 increase to raise teacher salaries. Del Rio Independent School District could gain at least 35 000 next year, and up to 40 180 with the extra 2.50, based on 2009 pupils.
Under A M Wolsey of Austin and UT Department of Anthropology a UT crew labors near Comal Springs on Klappenbach Hill road on the western edge of New Braunfels. Excavation suggests the area may have served as a burial or camping ground for Indian tribes.
The Del board of equalization will hold its first public hearing May 27, per Mrs. Nellie Buchanan district assessor-collector. Notices were mailed to about 125 property owners to appear and explain why their property renditions should be changed.
Oakland May 16 Emmett Wedman Alameda pleaded guilty before Police Judge Chris B Fox to overtime parking. He told the judge I followed my wife into a furniture store to keep her from buying more. The judge called the excuse good and ordered Wedman to have $2 returned.
Washington May 16 William Phillips undersecretary of state renewed attention to prior American warnings against Japanese expansion in China He cited Secretary Hulls December 5 1935 statement on Japanese influence beyond the Great Wall and said the position remains government policy.
The Senate Finance Committee discussed windfall tax provisions in the House bill as it awaits treasury estimates. Chairman Harrison said a Monday estimate would precede a bill release around mid next week and noted the compromise would raise income tax for all filers.
The 103 graduates, largest class in school history, will receive diplomas May 22 in a centennial themed ceremony. Historical sketches will trace Texas progress over the past 100 years during the program.
Oregon political veterans Senator Charles Mc Nary and national committeeman Ralph Williams continued to rout Townsend Pension Plan candidates as returns passed the halfway point in the primary.
Fifty-two Del Rio Boy Scouts closed their first district Camporee with a barbecue and awards. Troop 71, led by Les Cranfill, won the event, with Troop 70 placing second and the First Methodist Church troop taking third. Max Martin of Troop 71 earned the Eagle Badge as district leaders praised the camp setup and performances.
Governor Winship directs all authorities in San Juan Puerto Rico to vigorously prosecute any desecration of the United States flag. The statement emphasizes strict enforcement and public accountability across the island.
With Poppy Day a week away, American Legion Auxiliary members distributed posters made by Junior School and Sacred Heart Academy pupils. Thirty six posters entered to be judged by Legionnaires on May 23, the day of the appeal. The two top posters win Centennial coins. funds stay in Del Rio to aid disabled veterans and families. A Rose Shop window display by Mrs. Elmira Menefee features a grave marker cross, poppies, and crossed flags to promote the event.
Austin May 16 forecast a stout contest for speaker of the 45th legislature with two incumbents Rep Homer Leonard and Rep Bullock Hyder as announced candidates others are viewed as possibles. Campaign leaders for the announced men are reportedly seeking support from Democratic nominees for House seats signaling an early, wide effort due to expected large turnover in the House. Rep R W Calvert and Rep R Emmett Morse are viewed as likely prospects with Calvert having previously challenged Speaker Coke Stevenson in the 44th term.
The State Soil Conservation committee at College Station says the base rice acreage and production for 1936 will match 1935 levels, with possible upward adjustments for eligible producers.

He located rare images including the only known picture of John Birdsdall, and traced a Winston Quinan painting. Separately UT reconstructs a 50 million year old dinosaur track trail in Hamilton County for Centennial display.
