Sixty Del Rio Girl Scouts joined the Girl Scout Festival in Uvalde with a sightseeing tour of the home of Vice-President and Mrs John N Garner. The residence, amid a pecan grove, is in use between sessions of Congress.
Washington reports worldwide retail activity shows improving week across 30 U S cities. Trade in Dallas up to 42 percent, automobile sales above last year but spring production level passed. Weather aided shopping. New York wholesale fair. Detroit slow but improving. reserve department stores indicate mixed regional changes.
L Nixon representing Corpus Christi interests was in Del Rio seeking leases for early production. He expects two test wells near Blanco within two weeks and plans to move drilling gear to Del Rio if a suitable lease is obtained. Reynolds of Kermit and Paul Turney Ranch in Ed County hold leases with 160 acres. a nearby well produced sixteen barrels daily last year but halted due to water intrusion. Mitchell of McCamey holds acres on the Turney Ranch and staked Section 160 near Reynolds base. Patterson and Harrison on Felix Har Ranch, north of Del Rio, have shut down awaiting more equipment and aim to resume today.
The Del Rio region remains generally fair tonight and Tuesday with a maximum around 72 degrees and a minimum near 60 degrees. Overnight low earlier this morning was 66 degrees.
Washington reports a fresh U S protest over Japanese bombing of Chinese civilians. Secretary Hull says Ambassador Grew conveyed strong representations to Tokyo. U S munitions sales to Japan halted since January. A destroyer was sent to Amoy to probe the Chinese port seizure.
New York on May 15 reports Charlies Francis De Ganahl died at Memorial Hospital aged 69. A Texas native, he worked as a reporter and explorer before running a sugar plantation and moving into oil. He built a shipyard in Newburgh during WWI and later promoted oil cracking in England. His home was in White Plains, where he funded a cancer clinic. he leaves a widow and three sons Frank Carl and Joe.
In Harlan County Kentucky brigadier general orders 200 more National Guard troops into the county after a miner Treed Bates 35 of Harlan Fuel Company is shot dead on a street near his brother in law Walter Rowe 25. A second man Elbert Clark 28 is shot in the leg near the hotel housing Guard headquarters. Officials say the killings are not linked to labor troubles as state troopers arrive to calm a tense scene as mines prepare to reopen with soldier protection.
Washington May 15 advocates of restraint warn total federal appropriations this session may top 10 billion dollars with 6.446 billion already approved or in bills. Senator King notes apathy toward fiscal policy as costs rise while revenues lag, predicting 10 billion by adjournment.
The National Fitness Council reports to 1,641 local authorities that flood lighting playgrounds and fields would aid workers and would not be costly or harmful to eyesight.
At the Uvalde Girl Scout Festival El Progreso Club awarded Troop Six of Del Rio a plaque for amassing the most points in contests held by sixty local scouts. Grace Helton captained the troop, which dominated relays singing and nature events while Troop Five and other Del Rio units also placed in various activities.
Six Del Ricans attended the opening of the twenty first West Texas Chamber of Commerce convention in Abilene on Monday. The three day event includes business sessions contests and entertainment with Allen Robertson Del Rio’s entry in the My Home Town speaking contest.

Lima reports Dr Hipolito Larrabure and sixty doctors witnessed the Cuatsarcan operation delivering a 5.96-pound boy to Lina Medina, a child mother from Pisco. The infant and mother are said to be well, with the mother confirmed at about five years old and five teeth erupted.
Bill Hord suffered a painful flesh wound on his right knee in a Sunday afternoon motorcycle wreck near Ninth Street and Avenue 8. The inner side of his knee was cut as he had difficulty with the motorcycle. He was resting at home on Monday.
No change in the condition of former Texas congressman at large George B. Terrell after a stroke he suffered Thursday afternoon in Rusk. His son reported on his return from Alto that Terrell has complete paralysis on the right side and remains under care.
