News Behind the News in Washington reports tariff disputes over wheat and rye drawing protests from Minnesota North and South Dakota and Montana. Rye imports surge despite a rye subsidy and lack of countervailing duties.
Ten year old William Russell Stevens died after stepping on a high tension bus bar at the Central Power and Light sub station near the San Felipe Creek ice plant. Distribution engineer S A Worley described the arc and 11 000 volts flowing through the bars as the boy fell from the upper structure. The boy, a Del Rio resident since 1926, attended San Felipe School No 1. Survivors include his parents Mr and Mrs J Russell Stevens two sisters Mary and Emma and brother J Russell Jr. Grandparents Mr and Mrs Emanuel Stevens of Detroit. The eight foot fence and padlocked gate surrounded the site at the power company facility.
Del Rio chapter of the Reserve Officers Association hosted Captain Jee V. Hunnicutt Infantry U. S. Army 90th Division of San Antonio for a dinner in his honor at the Roswell Monday evening. Attending were Lieut. Col. Arthur Kennedy Captain Jesse Ryle Jr. and Lieuts. Sam Bunton Chas Bushnell R. C. Courtney W. O. Fritze John Miller Chas. Nixon Parson Rufus Rogers and W. C. Edgeworth.

Seven crewmen of the Nantucket lightship were killed when the liner Olympic collided with the lightship about 40 miles off Massachusetts. The Olympic master said the liner had 11 or 12 men aboard and stood by the lightship after the crash.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked Congress for 1.322 billion dollars to taper off emergency recovery expenditures in the coming year. The main 940 million would go to general relief and public works with discretionary use as demand requires.
John J. Ryan, 44, of East Port Chester, was given a five to ten year sentence suspended on conditions. He must pay his victim’s widow $15 weekly for five years and cover funeral costs, plus five years of sobriety. He pleaded guilty to second degree manslaughter for fatally knocking Charles Francis Hadden in Port Chester after a December dispute. Ryan, a NY Telephone lineman, provided $100 at sentencing.

Earl B. Schrader, longtime member of the United States Customs Force, died at his Garden Parks home shortly after 2 p m Tuesday after a period of critical illness since Thursday. He and his family arrived in Del Rio in 1925.
W. T. Eibe of Dixon California shipped 3,800 shorn yearling ewes for his ranch after a Del Rio visit. He bought from J. E White and others at about 5.25 dollars per head, weighing around 400 pounds. Californians’ claim to be biggest sheep buyer drew local curiosity. Eibe joked about his weight and shared tales from the trip and his family.
Crockett County officers investigate a $16000 bank robbery believed buried near a marked hackberry tree on Live Oak Creek off Highway 27. Two men camped at Tom Brown’s home then dug up the loot, with fresh holes and tree carvings forming a triangle. Garda suspects bandit links and double crossing.
The Supreme Court affirmed a Saline County jury verdict imposing the death penalty on Mark H. Shank a 42 year old Ohio attorney who confessed mass poisoning murder.
A mob of 500 striking longshoremen attacked the stockade housing 400 non-strikers at the San Pedro harbor. Dick Parker was killed and 20 others seriously injured. John Knudsen is dying from a chest wound and Glenn Fox suffered a skull fracture. Police and guards dispersed the rioters after guards opened fire amid trampling.
The Herald Printing Company announces the Price Determination Schedule sets a minimum price of 10 percent below listed rates for all commercial printing. They note the minimum is the floor, not a ceiling, and advise charging according to job value. A Blue Eagle confirms cooperation with NRA standards on fair wages and hours.
Approximately 100 attended the Women’s Missionary Society conference of the Uvalde District of the Methodist Church in Del Rio on Tuesday. The gathering began at 10 a.m. with an organ prelude, devotion led by Rev. Chas Nixon, and communion. Mrs Ray Ross gave the welcome, Mrs B Maine s of Uvalde gave the response, and solos and reports were shared. Luncheon was served in the House of Friendship.
Tucson reports Charles G. Robles denies ransom rumors about 6 year old June Robles released from a desert prison after a private offer of ten thousand dollars. Los Angeles authorities say three men arrested in the Get tle kidnapping confessed involvement in the Beverly Hills millionaire case.
Statements from GAL describe Jimmy Kirk arranging a kidnapping at Gettle's summer home last week with Roy Williams assisting and Kerrigan guarding Gettle. Kirk allegedly planned to ransom Gettle for $60,000 while Gettle was urged to draft letters about delivery arrangements.
M. J. Benefield of Brady was elected commander of the Texas American Legion department by the state executive committee, succeeding L. Van Perkins of Cameron who resigned May 5 after being charged with forging a payee's name on a government obligation. Orville H. Turner of Brownwood became commander of the Fifth Division. Perkins cited publicity over personal affairs in his resignation. George E. Hughes, state adjutant, noted the resignation was accepted without comment.
Del Rio and vicinity forecast shows a warm night and a warmer Wednesday with a high around 88 degrees yesterday and a low of 72. The minimum this morning was 63 degrees.
